Every head in the ballroom turned to follow Ethan's finger.

Standing near the far wall, half-hidden behind a pillar, was Marcus Hale — Vanessa's younger brother.

Marcus had been at the engagement party all evening.

Smiling.

Shaking hands.

Refilling his champagne glass.

Now he looked like a man watching the floor open beneath him.

"That's a lie," Vanessa said.

Her voice cracked on the last word.

Ethan didn't look at her.

He kept his eyes on Marcus.

"The footage is from a traffic camera two blocks from where my car left the road.

It shows a black SUV following me for six minutes before the curve."

Someone in the crowd whispered.

Others shifted closer to the screen.

"Marcus drives a black SUV," an older man near the back said quietly.

Vanessa spun toward her brother.

"Don't say anything."

But Marcus had already taken one step forward.

His jaw was tight.

His glass was gone.

"You don't know what you're talking about," he said.

Ethan reached into his jacket again.

This time he removed a folded document.

"Your insurance company does.

They flagged an anonymous tip three weeks ago.

Someone called in and described the vehicle.

Described the driver."

Vanessa's father made a sound that wasn't quite a word.

"Who made that call?" Vanessa demanded.

Ethan looked at her calmly.

"Someone who was in the car with Marcus that night."

The room went completely still.

Vanessa's face changed.

Not with anger this time.

With fear.

"That's not possible," she whispered.

"She wouldn't."
