The grand ballroom of Grayhaven House glittered beneath thousands of crystal chandeliers, humming with the nervous energy of forty elite syndicate bosses, corrupt politicians, and high-stakes financiers.
Outside, the rain had stopped, leaving behind a slick, reflective courtyard illuminated by imported security floodlights. Inside, the air was thick with designer perfume, expensive scotch, and the suffocating tension of a throne room awaiting a dead king.
I stood near the service entrance wearing a formal black hostess gown, my hands clasped tightly in front of me. Lila was safely tucked away in the secure upper suite under the watch of Damian's two remaining loyal guards.
At the head of the mahogany banquet table stood Vincent Russo.
He looked magnificent in a pristine white tuxedo, raising a crystal flute filled with vintage champagne as he addressed the murmuring crowd.
“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed partners,” Vincent’s voice echoed smoothly across the ballroom. “We gather tonight under a shadow of profound sorrow. Our beloved leader, Damian Volkov, has suffered a catastrophic cardiac decline. As his closest brother in arms, it breaks my heart to announce that he is no longer capable of leading our enterprise.”
A murmur of calculated shock rippled through the gathered crowd.
“In accordance with emergency succession protocols,” Vincent continued, a triumphant smile breaking through his mask of grief, “the board has reviewed his final medical directives. Effective immediately, full operational control of Volkov Industries passes to—”
Clang.
The heavy mahogany double doors at the far end of the ballroom swung open with a resounding, violent crash.
The music cut out instantly. Every head turned in unison toward the entrance.
There, standing upright in the doorway, supported by a heavy cane but walking with an unmistakable, lethal aura of command, was Damian Volkov.
He wore a sharply tailored charcoal suit, his broad shoulders squared, his face pale but carved from absolute granite. The men who had whispered of his imminent death stepped back in sheer, unconcealed terror, parting like the Red Sea before an avenging ghost.
Vincent’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering into a thousand glittering diamonds against the marble floor.
“You... you should be dead,” Vincent choked out, his aristocratic composure evaporating in a single second.
Damian advanced slowly down the center aisle, his dark eyes fixed entirely on his treacherous second-in-command.
“Disappointed, Vincent?” Damian’s voice carried effortlessly across the silent hall, dripping with ice. “You always were impatient. You poured the poison into my tonic every morning for three weeks, expecting my heart to stop before the summit. But you made one critical miscalculation.”
Vincent swallowed hard, taking a desperate step backward. “You’re delirious. The sickness has rotted your brain—”
“I didn't catch the poison myself,” Damian interrupted, stepping right up to the dais. He raised his hand, and from the side doors, two loyal guards marched forward, dragging a trembling, pale-faced Dr. Marcus Vance between them.
Marcus took one look at Damian’s cold glare and collapsed to his knees, sobbing hysterically. “He made me do it! Vincent threatened to kill my family if I didn't synthesize the metabolic inhibitor! It was Vincent!”
The ballroom erupted into chaotic uproar. Syndicate bosses shouted over one another, hands dropping instinctively toward concealed holsters.
Vincent realized the game was over. In a flash of desperate survival instinct, he whipped a hidden revolver from his waistband, pointing the barrel straight at Damian’s chest.
“Then we end it right here!” Vincent shrieked, his face twisting into a mask of pure madness. “If I can't have the empire, nobody will!”
