By late afternoon, the news had shattered the internet.
The media narrative flipped entirely within hours. Headlines shifted from accusing me of extortion to exposing the shocking corruption of Eleanor Moretti: BILLIONAIRE'S MOTHER ARRESTED FOR FRAMING DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AND HIDING TWIN HEIRS.
The public sympathy shifted violently in my favor, but I didn't care about the news or the public opinion. My only focus was protecting Eli and Mara from the emotional shockwave.
At 4:00 PM, a knock came at my front door.
I opened it to find Luca. He looked utterly spent. His tie was loosened, his hair was slightly disheveled, and the weight of the last twenty-four hours was visible in the heavy shadows under his eyes. But despite the exhaustion, there was a profound sense of relief surrounding him.
“She’s in custody,” Luca said quietly, standing on my porch. “Bail has been set, but my attorneys are ensuring she remains under house arrest until trial. She won't ever come near you or the kids again, Nia.”
I looked at him, feeling a strange mix of relief and melancholy. “It must hurt... knowing your own mother was capable of that.”
Luca looked down at his shoes, swallowing hard. “It does. But losing six years of my children’s lives hurts a thousand times more. That’s why I’m here, Nia. Not to talk about Eleanor, or Moretti Global, or the media. I came to ask if I can spend an hour with Eli and Mara. Just one hour.”
I stepped back from the doorway, opening the entrance wide. “They’re in the backyard. They’ve been asking about you all day.”
Luca’s eyes lit up with a ray of pure, unadulterated hope. He stepped inside, taking off his coat and hanging it by the door.
We walked out onto the back patio. The late afternoon sun was glowing across the lawn, where Eli was kicking a soccer ball toward a small makeshift goal, while Mara was sitting at a wooden picnic table, busily coloring in a sketchbook.
When the sound of the patio door closing echoed across the yard, both children looked up.
“It’s the tall man!” Mara announced, setting down her crayon.
“His name is Luca, Mara,” I said gently, walking over to the table. “And he came here because he wants to talk to you guys.”
Eli stopped dribbling the soccer ball, cradling it under his arm as he walked over, his dark eyes studying Luca with intense curiosity.
Luca walked slowly toward them, dropping to one knee on the grass so he was level with their height. He looked at Eli, then at Mara, his eyes brimming with unshed tears.
“I brought something for you,” Luca said softly, reaching into his pocket and pulling out two small, velvet boxes.
He handed one to Mara and one to Eli.
Mara opened hers first. Inside was a delicate, custom-made silver necklace featuring a pendant shaped like a little running horse with six tiny diamond legs—an exact replica of the drawing she had been making on the paper placemat at the restaurant yesterday.
Mara gasped, her eyes going wide. “My running horse! You remembered!”
“I’ll never forget anything about you, Mara,” Luca said softly.
Eli opened his box to reveal a high-end, solid silver pocket watch. When he pressed the latch, the lid popped open, revealing an intricate engraving inside: To Eli — My son, my partner, my strength. Love, Dad.
Eli ran his little thumb over the engraved letters. “Dad,” he read aloud slowly.
Luca swallowed hard, tears finally spilling over his dark lashes. “I know I missed a lot of birthdays, Eli. I know I wasn't there to teach you how to kick a ball or read a watch. But if you give me a chance... I will spend every day of the rest of my life making it up to you.”
Eli looked at the watch, then at his soccer ball, and finally at Luca’s face.
“Do you know how to play soccer?” Eli asked straightforwardly.
Luca let out a wet, breathless laugh, wiping his cheek with his sleeve. “I used to play in college. I was pretty good.”
Eli kicked the ball toward Luca. “Show me.”
For the next hour, I sat on the patio bench, watching a miracle unfold.
Luca—a man who managed a multi-billion-dollar empire—was running barefoot across my grass, letting Eli tackle him for the soccer ball, and patiently letting Mara clip pink hairbows into his dark hair. The laughter echoing across the yard was infectious, filling the void that had lingered over our lives for six long years.
As I watched Luca swing Mara onto his shoulders while Eli chased him, my heartached with a sweetness I hadn't felt in a lifetime. The man I had lost six years ago hadn't died—he had just been waiting to be found.
