“Noah!””
I dropped beside the broken floor so fast my knees hit the wood.
Pain didn’t matter.
Nothing mattered except finding my son.
“Dad!””
His voice came from below.
Weak.
Scared.
But alive.
I reached into the crawlspace.
“I’m here. I’m getting you out.””
Behind me, nobody spoke.
Not Elias.
Not Vanessa.
Not Brooks.
The silence felt heavier than any accusation.
I grabbed Noah’s arm again.
But before I pulled, Elias spoke.
“Marcus.””
I stopped.
I hated that I listened.
I hated that his voice carried something that sounded almost like concern.
“What?””
Elias stood near the hidden room entrance.
His expression wasn’t the face of a villain.
That was what scared me.
He looked like someone who had been waiting years to tell the truth.
“Before you pull him out, you need to know what happened that night.””
I tightened my grip on Noah.
“I don’t care.””
“Yes, you do.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I care about my son.””
Elias nodded.
“That’s exactly why you need to hear it.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Marcus, don’t listen to him.””
I turned.
“Why?””
She stopped.
“Why shouldn’t I?””
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Elias looked at her.
“Because you know I’m telling the truth.””
“Shut up.””
The words came from Vanessa.
Not scared.
Angry.
For the first time all night, I saw something else.
Guilt.
Elias looked at me.
“Your wife didn’t hide Noah from me.””
My heart stopped.
“Then who?””
Nobody answered.
I looked down at Noah.
“Buddy, can you hear me?””
“Yes.””
“Tell me what happened.””
There was a pause.
Then his voice came.
“Mom found me.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
I looked up.
“What?””
Noah continued.
“She came into my room.””
The room went silent.
“Why?””
“She was crying.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Noah…”
“She told me I had to be quiet.””
My breathing became harder.
“She said someone was coming.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Someone?””
Noah’s voice trembled.
“I asked who.””
“And?””
“She said…”
He stopped.
“Buddy?””
“She said it was someone who wanted to hurt Dad.””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Marcus, please.””
“No.””
I stared at her.
“Let him finish.””
Noah continued.
“Mom picked me up.””
My jaw tightened.
“She carried me downstairs.””
Vanessa started crying.
“I was trying to protect him.””
I looked at her.
“You put him under the floor.””
“No.””
Her answer came immediately.
“No, Marcus.””
She shook her head.
“I hid him.””
The distinction meant nothing to me.
“He was seven years old.””
“I know.””
“He was trapped.””
“I know!””
Her voice broke.
The room went quiet.
Vanessa covered her face.
“I know.””
For the first time, she looked less like someone hiding a secret.
And more like someone drowning in one.
Elias spoke softly.
“She thought she was saving him.””
I turned.
“You don’t get to defend her.””
“I’m not.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“I’m explaining.””
Brooks stepped between us.
“Enough.””
Everyone looked at him.
He stared at Elias.
“You disappeared for twelve years.””
Elias nodded.
“Yes.””
“You let people think you were dangerous.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Elias looked at the journal.
“Because someone needed me to disappear.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Elias didn’t answer.
Instead, he walked toward the hidden room.
He pulled out a photograph.
Then handed it to me.
It was old.
My father.
Vanessa.
Elias.
And another person.
Someone standing beside them.
Someone I recognized immediately.
My hands went cold.
“No.””
Vanessa looked at the photo.
Then looked away.
“Marcus…”
I couldn’t speak.
Because the person in the picture was impossible.
A person who had been dead for years.
My father.
Standing beside him.
The person who had destroyed my entire life.
The person whose name I had heard all night.
But never expected.
I whispered:
“Elias wasn’t the secret.””
Everyone stayed silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You were running from someone else.””
She nodded slowly.
And then she said:
“Your father knew.””
