I had spent years believing I knew my wife.

I knew how she took her coffee.

I knew she cried during sad movies but pretended she didn’t.

I knew she hated thunderstorms because of something that happened when she was a child.

I knew the little things.

The ordinary things.

But standing there in that living room, staring at fear on her face, I realized something terrifying.

I knew the woman Vanessa wanted me to know.

Not the woman she had been hiding.

“Who found us?”” I asked.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Her eyes stayed fixed on the toy car.

Brooks moved closer.

“Vanessa.””

She flinched.

“Daniel, please.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“This ends tonight.””

I looked between them.

“How long have you two been talking?””

Neither responded.

That was enough.

I laughed bitterly.

“Wow.””

I shook my head.

“My son is under the floor, a police officer knows about it, and my wife has been keeping secrets with him.””

“Marcus—”

“No.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You don’t get to say my name like everything is normal.””

Lily stood quietly near the couch.

She looked smaller than she had all night.

That broke me.

I walked over and knelt beside her.

“Hey.””

She looked up.

“Are you mad at Mom?””

I didn’t know how to answer.

Because I was.

But I was also scared.

“I’m trying to understand.””

She wiped her tears.

“Mom loves Noah.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Lily…”

“No,” Lily said softly.

Her voice shook.

“But she was scared.””

I looked at my daughter.

“When?””

“The night Noah disappeared.””

The room went silent.

I turned toward Vanessa.

“What happened that night?””

Vanessa looked down.

Three days of fear.

Three days of silence.

Finally, she spoke.

“Noah saw something.””

My chest tightened.

“Something what?””

She walked toward the broken floor.

“He was awake late that night. He heard me talking.””

“To who?””

Her eyes moved toward the window.

“To someone from my past.””

Brooks crossed his arms.

“Vanessa.””

She closed her eyes.

“I thought he was gone.””

“Who?””

She whispered a name.

“Elias.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But the reaction from Brooks told me everything.

His expression changed.

“Marcus…”

I looked at him.

“You know him.””

Brooks nodded slowly.

“Everyone in this city knows him.””

“Who is he?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Brooks said:

“Someone who doesn’t forgive people for leaving.””

The words sent a chill through me.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew this person?””

“Yes.””

“Who was he?””

She swallowed.

“My brother.””

I froze.

“You have a brother?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I had a brother.””

The room felt colder.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked toward the floor.

“Elias disappeared twelve years ago.””

Brooks shook his head.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You know I’m right.””

Brooks stepped closer.

“Elias wasn’t reported missing.””

“Because my family covered it up.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

I looked at my wife.

“You had an entire family secret?””

She looked away.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No. You were controlling what I knew.””

Before she could respond, Noah’s voice came from below.

“Dad.””

I immediately dropped beside the opening.

“I’m here.””

His voice was weak.

“Someone came before.””

My heart stopped.

“When?””

“Before you found me.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What do you mean?””

Noah hesitated.

Then he whispered:

“The man told me he was going to take me somewhere safe.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“Marcus…”

I looked down.

“What man?””

Noah didn’t answer.

Instead, he said something that made Vanessa’s face lose all color.

“He looked just like Mom.””

Nobody moved.

Brooks slowly reached for his radio.

“Marcus…”

“What?””

His voice was barely audible.

“You need to pull Noah out now.””

I grabbed Noah’s hand tighter.

“Why?””

Brooks looked toward the hallway.

“Because if Elias is inside this house…”

A sound interrupted him.

A quiet creak.

From upstairs.

Then another.

Someone was walking.

Slowly.

Coming down.

And Vanessa whispered:

“He never came here for Noah.””
