Judge Robert Vance—a stern, silver-haired magistrate known for having zero patience for wealthy litigants playing high-society games—sat behind the elevated mahogany bench, flipping through our preliminary briefs with a pair of reading glasses perched on the bridge of his nose.
Maya sat beside me, looking immaculate in a sharp navy pantsuit, her leather briefcase neatly organized with color-coded tabs.
Across the aisle sat Alex. He wasn't wearing his usual polished corporate armor; he wore a dark, unpressed suit, dark circles bruised the skin beneath his slate-grey eyes, and he sat flanked by two high-priced defense attorneys who looked increasingly nervous as they whispered among themselves.
“Mr. Moretti,” Judge Vance said, his gravelly voice cutting through the quiet courtroom. “Your counsel has filed an emergency motion for temporary sole custody alleging maternal abandonment. However, my clerks have reviewed Ms. Vance’s counter-filing, which includes a comprehensive forensic audit of corporate accounts, international wire transfers, and documented evidence of systemic marital waste.”
Alex’s lead attorney stood up smoothly, adjusting his tie. “Your Honor, those financial documents are entirely irrelevant to the matter of child custody. My client is simply—”
“Counsel,” Judge Vance interrupted, his gaze locking onto the lawyer with laser-like precision. “When a litigant uses corporate slush funds to purchase luxury real estate for an extramarital partner while simultaneously threatening to withhold a mother’s access to her four-year-old child, it speaks directly to their stability, judgment, and fitness as a primary custodian.”
The courtroom went dead silent.
Alex slowly raised his head, his eyes locking onto mine across the aisle. There was no anger in his expression anymore—only a profound, devastating defeat. He finally understood that his money, his guards, and his intimidation tactics meant nothing inside this room.
“Furthermore,” Judge Vance continued, picking up a pink-tabbed document, “I have reviewed the preliminary joint custody agreement drafted by Mrs. Moretti’s counsel. It grants shared fifty-fifty physical custody, establishes an immediate restraining order preventing any unauthorized personnel from entering the marital residence, and mandates immediate psychological counseling for both parties.”
Judge Vance looked up from the bench, his eyes sweeping across both tables.
“If either party attempts to weaponize this child or obstruct the court-ordered visitation schedule,” the judge warned, his voice dropping into a chilling register, “I will strip them of custody entirely and place the minor in the temporary care of the state child welfare division. Do I make myself clear?”
“Crystal clear, Your Honor,” Maya said immediately.
Alex’s lead attorney swallowed hard and nodded. “Yes, Your Honor.”
“Motion for sole custody denied. Joint temporary custody granted as outlined in the petitioner's brief. Court is adjourned.”
The sharp rap of the judge’s gavel echoed off the oak walls like a gunshot.
