Lucienne was out of the car before her driver could react.

"Ms.

Lucienne — the traffic—"

She didn't hear him.

She crossed the sidewalk in four steps and crouched down in front of the figure.

Up close, the face was hollow.

Weathered.

But unmistakable.

"Daniel," she whispered.

The man flinched at the sound of his own name, as if he hadn't heard it spoken aloud in years.

His eyes — still the same dark brown she remembered — slowly focused on her face.

Then something in them broke open.

"Luci…"

His voice was barely there.

Cracked and dry, like something that hadn't been used in a long time.

Lucienne's hands were shaking.

She reached out and touched the silver bracelet.

It was still there.

Still intact.

After everything.

"What happened to you?" she asked.

"Where have you been?"

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

His eyes moved past her shoulder — and went still.

Lucienne turned.

Her driver was standing a few feet back, phone raised.

Not taking a photo.

On a call.

And the name she heard him say quietly into the phone made her bl00d run cold.

It was a name she hadn't heard in twenty-five years.

The name of the person who had torn her and Daniel apart.
