The ballroom had never been so quiet.

Darius stared at the document.

The original report.

The one Marcus had spent years hiding.

The one that was supposed to answer everything.

But instead, it created a new question.

His eyes moved across the page again.

Then again.

Like reading it more times would change the words.

It didn’t.

Nia watched his face.

“Darius…”

He didn’t respond.

“Tell me.””

His voice was low.

“What does it say?””

Darius looked at her.

And for a moment, she saw the same man she had known years ago.

The man who trusted her.

The man who loved their daughter.

But now he looked wounded.

“It says…”

He stopped.

The silence became unbearable.

“It says I’m not listed as the father.””

A wave of shock moved through the room.

Ava looked confused.

“But you said…”

Darius immediately looked at her.

“No.””

He knelt.

“Don’t listen to anyone else right now.””

She stared.

“You’re not my dad?””

His heart broke.

“That’s not what this means.””

“But the paper…”

“I don’t care what a paper says about how much I love you.””

Ava looked at him.

“But what does it say?””

Darius looked away.

Because he didn’t know how to explain something he didn’t understand himself.

Nia stepped forward.

“I can explain.””

Everyone turned.

Darius stood slowly.

“Then explain.””

Nia took a deep breath.

“The report was supposed to show something else.””

“What?””

“That Marcus changed more than one thing.””

Marcus, still standing near the entrance with security keeping him away, laughed quietly.

“Still lying.””

Nia looked at him.

“You know exactly what you did.””

Marcus smiled.

“Tell them.””

Darius looked between them.

“Tell me what?””

Nia’s hands shook.

“When Ava was born, the hospital records were altered.””

“By Marcus?””

“Yes.””

Marcus shrugged.

“You have no proof.””

Nia looked at the USB.

“Actually, I do.””

The room went still.

Darius looked at the drive.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Nia looked devastated.

“Because every time I tried, something happened.””

“What do you mean?””

She looked toward Marcus.

“He always knew.””

Marcus smiled.

“I knew because you were careless.””

Nia’s expression hardened.

“No. Because you watched me.””

The accusation changed the room.

Darius looked at Marcus.

“Did you?””

Marcus didn’t deny it.

Instead, he said:

“I was protecting what was mine.””

Nobody understood.

“What does that mean?”” Darius asked.

Marcus looked at Ava.

“She was never supposed to belong to you.””

The words made Darius furious.

“She is not property.””

Marcus ignored him.

“She was supposed to belong to the family.””

Nia’s face changed.

“Don’t.””

Darius looked at her.

“What family?””

Nobody answered.

Then Simone spoke.

“The Carter family.””

Everyone turned.

Simone stepped forward.

“I found out before the wedding.””

Darius looked at her.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you still planned to marry me?””

Simone’s eyes filled with regret.

“I thought I could fix it.””

Marcus laughed.

“You thought you were smarter than me.””

Simone looked at him.

“I thought I could stop you.””

“You couldn’t.””

“No.””

She looked at Darius.

“But I tried.””

Darius looked exhausted.

“How are all of you connected?””

Nia looked at Ava.

Then finally told the truth.

“Marcus is my half-brother.””

The room went silent.

“He hated my mother.””

Darius listened.

“He believed she stole everything from his family.””

Marcus’s expression darkened.

“She did.””

Nia shook her head.

“She left you nothing because you destroyed everything yourself.””

The two siblings stared at each other.

Years of anger passed between them.

Darius looked at the report.

“So what is the truth?””

Nia closed her eyes.

“The original report was not finished.””

“What?””

“Marcus changed it before the final signature.””

Darius looked confused.

“Then why does it say I’m not the father?””

Nia looked at the document.

“Because Marcus removed the last page.””

The DJ looked through the recovered files.

“There’s another page.””

Everyone turned.

The printer began producing a sheet.

One page.

One answer.

Darius took it.

His hands shook.

He read silently.

Then his face changed.

Nia watched.

“What does it say?””

Darius looked up.

And the pain in his eyes was different now.

Not confusion.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

“Her father’s name…”

He stopped.

Ava looked at him.

“Who?””

Darius looked at the paper.

Then at Marcus.

Then at Simone.

Because the name on the page was impossible.

It was someone standing inside that ballroom.

Someone nobody had suspected.
