“Mr. Moretti!” I shouted.

I grabbed the first thing I saw on the floor—a small, wooden rosary that had spilled from the cabinet.

I pressed the wooden cross directly into Luca’s hand.

“Look at it!” I yelled over the chaos.

Luca froze.

He looked down at the rosary tangled in his fingers.

It was frayed, the wooden beads worn smooth from years of prayer.

“It’s hers,” I said softly. “Emily’s mother. Do you think she would want you to do this in front of your pregnant daughter?”

Luca’s breath hitched.

He looked at Emily.

She was sobbing, clutching her stomach, completely terrified of the monster her father had become in that moment.

Luca let go.

Marcus collapsed to the floor, coughing violently, gasping for air.

Luca stepped back, staring at his trembling hands.

“Marco,” Luca ordered, his voice hollow. “Tie him up. We’re turning him over to the very Feds he was trying to deal with.”

Marco nodded, pulling zip-ties from his tactical vest.

I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding.

It was over.

The truth was out. The threat was neutralized.

Or so I thought.

Emily suddenly let out a sharp, agonizing cry.

She doubled over, dropping to her knees on the dusty concrete.

“Emily!” I dropped beside her.

She looked up at me, her face completely drained of color, beads of sweat instantly forming on her forehead.

“Claire,” she gasped, gripping my wrist with terrifying strength.

I looked down.

A dark, wet stain was rapidly spreading across her gray wool coat.

She was only six months pregnant.

And her water had just broken.

Chapter 7 - THE CAB RIDE

Luca stood up slowly.

He looked at the young, terrified high school teacher standing before him.

Six weeks ago, Luca would have intimidated this boy. He would have tested him, threatened him, made sure he was worthy of the Moretti name.

Tonight, Luca just walked over and pulled the trembling young man into a tight embrace.

“She’s in surgery,” Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. “She’s strong. She’s fighting.”

Michael broke down, burying his face in his hands. “I should have been with her. She wanted to tell you tonight. I told her I’d wait by the phone.”

“It’s my fault,” Luca said gently. “But you’re here now. That’s what matters.”

Hours passed.

The waiting room felt like a purgatory of bad coffee and ticking clocks.

I sat in the corner, feeling entirely out of place, yet unable to leave.

Marco arrived around 3 AM, quietly briefing Luca.

“Marcus is in FBI custody,” Marco whispered. “We handed over the ledger. Vanessa is cooperating with them. The family is

insulated, Boss. It’s over.”

Luca nodded dismissively. He didn’t care about the empire anymore. He only cared about the double doors leading to the surgical ward.

At 4:15 AM, the doors finally opened.

A female doctor stepped out, looking exhausted, pulling down her surgical mask.

Luca and Michael were on their feet instantly.

“Family of Emily Moretti?” she asked.

“I’m her father,” Luca said.

“I’m her fiancé,” Michael added.

The doctor offered a tired, but genuine smile.

“It was a complicated delivery. We had to perform an emergency C-section, and the baby is premature.”

Luca stopped breathing.

“But,” the doctor continued, “they are both stable. Emily is resting in recovery. And you have a very tiny, but very loud, baby boy in the NICU.”

Michael let out a sob of pure joy, falling back into his chair.

Luca closed his eyes, crossing himself quickly.

“Can we see them?” Luca asked.

“Only parents in the NICU right now,” the doctor said gently to Michael. “But Mr. Moretti, you can see your daughter in room 412.”

Michael

hugged Luca, then practically sprinted down the hall toward the NICU.

Luca turned to me.

“Come with me, Claire.”

I shook my head. “No, sir. This is family time. I should go.”

“You saved her tonight,” Luca said firmly. “You stood up to Vanessa. You saved me from making a mistake with Marcus. You are coming with me.”

I didn’t argue.

We walked into room 412.

Emily was asleep, looking fragile but peaceful against the white pillows.

By her bed was a small table holding her personal items.

Among them was the little gift bag she had brought to the mansion.

Luca reached in and pulled out the tiny onesie.

GRANDPA LUCA.

He pressed it to his cheek, a single tear falling onto the fabric.

Then, he noticed something else on the table.

A yellow parking ticket, stuck inside Emily's wallet.

Luca picked it up, frowning.

“What is this?” he whispered.

I looked closer. It wasn't a parking ticket.

It was an old pawn shop receipt, dated three days before Emily’s mother died.

The item

pawned?

A custom-made gold mesh bracelet.

Luca stared at the receipt.

“If my wife pawned her real bracelet thirty years ago…” he muttered slowly, the realization hitting him.

“Then the bracelet Marcus gave Vanessa tonight…” I finished the thought.

“Was a fake,” Luca said. “Marcus didn’t have a secret affair with my wife. He had this fake bracelet made to manipulate me into doubting Emily’s parentage.”

The final puzzle piece clicked into place.

Marcus had fabricated the entire affair to break Luca emotionally, ensuring he would give up the empire without a fight.

Luca smiled, a true, unburdened smile.

His daughter was his. His wife had been loyal.

Chapter 8 - THE WAITING ROOM TICKET
