My father grabbed the phone.

“Who is this?””

The call ended.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Just silence.

Dad stared at the screen.

His face was pale.

Daniel looked at him.

“Was that Mark?””

My father didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

I had heard stories about Uncle Mark my entire life.

My dad’s younger brother.

His business partner.

The person who stood beside him after my mother died.

The person who brought food to our house.

The person who told me everything would be okay.

And now my mother’s final letter said he was involved.

“No,” Dad whispered.

He sat down.

“He wouldn’t.””

Laura looked at him sadly.

“Emily said the same thing.””

My father looked up.

“What?””

“She couldn’t believe it either.””

The rain outside became louder.

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

Laura looked away.

“Because she was afraid you would confront him.””

“And?””

“She thought he would destroy the evidence.””

Daniel opened his folder.

“We need to find Mark.””

Dad stood immediately.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“I need to talk to him first.””

I stepped forward.

“Dad, that’s what he wants.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“To control the story.””

The words surprised both of us.

Because they sounded like something my mother would have said.

Dad noticed too.

His expression softened.

“You’re right.””

It was the first time he had admitted that.

Not just that he was wrong.

That I might be right.

We drove to Uncle Mark’s office.

The same building where my father had spent twenty years building his company.

The place where I used to visit on weekends.

Where Mark would sneak me candy and tell me I was the smartest kid he knew.

The memories felt poisoned now.

When we entered, Mark’s assistant looked surprised.

“Mr. Carter?””

Dad didn’t stop walking.

“Where is Mark?””

“He’s in a meeting.””

“Tell him it’s urgent.””

A few minutes later, Mark stepped out.

He smiled.

Then he saw everyone.

The smile disappeared.

“Richard.””

My father stared at him.

“Did Emily find out?””

Mark froze.

That was all it took.

The question.

The reaction.

The truth hiding in the silence.

Mark looked at Nicole.

Then back at Dad.

“You don’t understand.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“That’s what everyone says.””

Mark lowered his voice.

“Not here.””

“No.””

Dad stepped closer.

“Here.””

Employees started looking over.

Mark glanced around.

“Fine.””

He opened his office door.

Inside, he closed it.

“You found the letter.””

My stomach dropped.

“You knew about it?””

Mark sighed.

“I knew Emily wrote something.””

Dad stared.

“How?””

“Because she told me.””

“Before she died?””

“Yes.””

My father looked devastated.

“You were with her.””

Mark didn’t answer.

“Were you?””

Finally:

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

I felt sick.

“What happened?””

Mark looked at me.

“I never wanted you involved.””

“You were involved in my mother’s death.””

“No.””

His answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“I made mistakes. But I didn’t kill Emily.””

Dad’s voice was shaking.

“Then explain.””

Mark sat down.

“Your mother discovered money was missing.””

“We know.””

“No.””

He looked at my father.

“She discovered it wasn’t just stolen.””

“What?””

Mark looked at me.

“Someone was trying to move ownership of the company.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Through legal documents?””

Mark nodded.

“Someone wanted Richard removed.””

Dad looked confused.

“Who?””

Mark looked at Nicole.

Then at the floor.

“Nicole.””

She immediately shouted:

“Don’t put this on me.””

Mark ignored her.

“She approached me months before the accident.””

My father stared.

“You worked with her?””

“I was investigating her.””

Nobody spoke.

Mark continued.

“She knew I had access to business records. She wanted me to help transfer control.””

Dad looked hurt.

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

The confession was quiet.

“But I was trying to stop her.””

My father looked at him.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Mark’s eyes filled.

“Because Emily told me not to.””

“Why?””

Mark looked at me.

“Because she believed someone inside the family would hurt Maya if the truth came out.””

My blood ran cold.

Someone inside the family.

Then Mark pulled out his phone.

“I saved one thing.””

“What?””

He opened a video file.

“My conversation with Nicole.””

He pressed play.

Nicole’s voice filled the room.

*“Once Richard believes Maya abandoned him, everything becomes easier.””*

My stomach turned.

Then another voice answered.

A man’s voice.

A voice I recognized.

My father went completely still.

Because the second voice said:

*“And after the trust is transferred, nobody will be able to stop us.””*

Dad whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

The video continued.

And then the man said his own name.

The room went silent.

Because it wasn’t Mark.

It wasn’t Nicole.

It was someone else.

Someone closer.

Someone my father had trusted more than anyone.
