I stared at the document.

The signature at the bottom belonged to my father.

Richard Carter.

My hands shook.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

The silence told me there was something here.

Something he had buried.

Thomas leaned against the wall.

“Tell her.””

My father looked at him.

“Don’t.””

“You owe her the truth.””

I looked between them.

“What is it?””

Dad closed his eyes.

“I made a mistake.””

The words were quiet.

But they carried more weight than any accusation.

“What mistake?””

He sat down.

“I signed a business agreement.””

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“Call it what it was.””

Dad looked at him.

“I trusted the wrong person.””

“No.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“You ignored your wife.””

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

Dad looked at me.

“Your mother found financial problems in the company.””

“I know.””

“She thought someone was stealing.””

“She was right.””

“Yes.””

He looked down.

“But when she told me, I didn’t believe her.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

Dad swallowed.

“Because Thomas convinced me she was wrong.””

Thomas smiled.

“Exactly.””

My father continued.

“I thought Emily was paranoid. I thought she was looking for problems because she was stressed.””

I felt tears building.

“So she tried to warn you.””

“Yes.””

“And you ignored her.””

He nodded.

“I did.””

That was the truth.

Not the one I expected.

Not the one Nicole wanted.

Something worse.

A human mistake.

A failure.

My father wasn’t the monster everyone had painted him to be.

But he wasn’t innocent either.

“My mother died because nobody listened to her.””

My father looked at me.

“I know.””

His voice broke.

“And I will regret that forever.””

Thomas opened another folder.

“But the accident wasn’t his fault.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Your father made mistakes. But he didn’t kill Emily.””

He pulled out a photograph.

A security camera image.

A car.

A parking lot.

A date.

The day before the accident.

“This is Nicole meeting me.””

Nicole’s face appeared in the image.

My stomach twisted.

“She knew everything.””

Thomas continued.

“She wanted control.””

My father stared.

“But why involve you?””

Thomas smiled.

“Because I knew the legal system.””

Daniel looked at him.

“And the accident?””

Thomas became quiet.

“That wasn’t supposed to happen.””

The room went cold.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas looked at the floor.

“Nicole wanted Emily scared.””

My father stepped forward.

“Scared?””

“She wanted Emily to stop investigating.””

“But she died.””

Thomas nodded.

“I know.””

“Who caused the crash?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

That was the question that mattered.

The one we had been chasing.

Finally, he whispered:

“Nicole’s brother.””

My heart stopped.

“Her brother?””

“Yes.””

Daniel immediately started recording.

“Name?””

Thomas looked at him.

“James Whitmore.””

I felt dizzy.

Another person.

Another hidden connection.

Thomas continued.

“James tampered with the car.””

My father looked destroyed.

“Why?””

“Because Emily found proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Thomas looked at me.

“The trust was never the only target.””

I frowned.

“What else?””

He handed me another document.

“This.””

I read the title.

My heart dropped.

*Custody Transfer Agreement.*

“What is this?””

Thomas answered:

“Emily discovered Nicole planned to make you legally dependent on her.””

I looked up.

“She wanted to take me?””

“Yes.””

Dad looked sick.

“She planned everything.””

Thomas nodded.

“Your father was supposed to look unstable. You were supposed to look rebellious. The court would believe Nicole was the only responsible adult.””

I thought about every fake message.

Every argument.

Every time my dad looked disappointed.

She had been building a case.

Against me.

My father walked toward me.

“Maya.””

I looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

This time, I believed him.

Not because he said it perfectly.

Because he finally understood what he had lost.

We left Thomas with the police.

The investigation began immediately.

Nicole was arrested.

James was found through the evidence Thomas provided.

And after six years, the truth finally came into the light.

But there was one thing I still needed.

My mother’s final words.

The last page of the letter.

The one I hadn’t read.

When we returned home, Dad sat beside me at the kitchen table.

The same place where everything started.

He handed me the folded paper.

“I think you should read this.””

I opened it.

The handwriting was faint.

But clear.

*Maya,*

*If you are reading this, then you know the truth.*

I continued.

*I need you to forgive your father someday. Not because he deserves it. Because you deserve peace.*

My eyes filled.

Then I reached the final line.

The line my mother had saved for me.

*The greatest thing Nicole tried to steal was not money. It was the love between a father and daughter.*

I looked at my dad.

And for the first time in years…

I reached for his hand.
