The folder landed on the coffee table with a quiet sound.
But to me, it felt like a bomb.
My school counselor, Mrs. Parker, stood there with a worried expression.
She had known me since freshman year.
She had helped me after my mom’s birthday came around and I spent the entire day crying in the bathroom.
She had listened when I said I felt like my father was becoming distant.
And now she was standing in my house because someone told her I was unsafe.
“Mrs. Parker,” I whispered.
She looked at me.
“Maya…”
Her voice sounded uncertain.
That scared me more than anything.
My dad picked up the folder.
“What is this?””
Nicole stepped forward.
“Richard, maybe we should talk privately.””
“No.””
His answer was immediate.
“No more secrets.””
Nicole’s face tightened.
Mrs. Parker looked uncomfortable.
“I was told there were concerns about Maya’s emotional behavior.””
I stared at Nicole.
“What did you tell her?””
Nobody answered.
Dad opened the folder.
Inside were printed emails.
Reports.
Statements.
All about me.
I recognized the words immediately.
“Angry.””
“Withdrawn.””
“Hostile.””
They were words Nicole had used when describing me.
Not who I was.
Who she wanted people to believe I was.
Dad flipped through the pages.
“Maya has been struggling because she believes she is unwanted,” Mrs. Parker explained carefully.
I looked up.
“She knew?””
Mrs. Parker nodded.
“You told me you felt like your dad didn’t care anymore.””
My eyes filled with tears.
Because I remembered that conversation.
I remembered sitting in her office, staring at the floor.
I remembered saying:
“I think my dad is happier when I’m not around.””
I never knew Nicole had been using my pain against me.
Dad looked devastated.
“I didn’t know you felt that way.””
I swallowed.
“I tried telling you.””
He looked down.
“I know.””
“No, Dad.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t.””
The room went silent.
“I sent you messages. I called you. I tried sitting with you at dinner.””
I wiped my eyes.
“But every time I tried, you looked tired. Like talking to me was a chore.””
Dad looked like someone had punched him.
“I thought you hated me.””
“And I thought you didn’t want me.””
That was the first honest thing we had said to each other in months.
Nicole interrupted.
“This is getting dramatic.””
Dad turned toward her.
“Stop.””
She froze.
He picked up another paper.
“What is this?””
Mrs. Parker looked confused.
“What did you find?””
Dad read aloud.
“Request for temporary guardianship evaluation.””
My heart stopped.
“Guardianship?””
Nicole immediately spoke.
“It was just an inquiry.””
“You were trying to remove me from my own home.””
“I was trying to help.””
“No.””
Dad’s voice became cold.
“You were trying to control everything.””
Nicole looked at me.
“You have no idea what you’ve done.””
I stared at her.
“What I’ve done?””
She stepped closer.
“You made your father choose between us.””
Dad moved between us.
“Don’t blame her for your actions.””
Nicole laughed bitterly.
“You really think you know everything now?””
Dad narrowed his eyes.
“What does that mean?””
She looked toward the folder.
Then smiled.
A small, frightening smile.
“Ask your daughter why she never told you about the money.””
My heart dropped.
“What money?””
Dad looked at me.
“Maya?””
“I don’t know what she’s talking about.””
Nicole shook her head.
“Of course you don’t.””
She reached into her purse and pulled out a small envelope.
Then she handed it to Dad.
“This came three months ago.””
Dad opened it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Slowly.
Confusion.
Then shock.
“What is this?””
He looked at me.
The room started spinning.
“Dad?””
He held up the paper.
“It’s a letter from a law firm.””
I stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Dad’s face changed.
Because whatever was written there was something Nicole wanted him to believe.
Something she had been saving.
Something she thought would finally destroy me.
Then he read the final line aloud.
“Maya Carter requested access to her inheritance account without parental approval.””
I stared at the paper.
“That’s impossible.””
Nicole crossed her arms.
“Is it?””
Dad looked at me.
For the first time that night, I saw a flicker of doubt return.
And that hurt more than the accusations.
Because after everything Nicole had done…
She still had one more weapon.
My own name.
Then my phone buzzed.
A new message appeared.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
And my blood went cold.
*Maya, if your father finds out what happened the night your mother died, everything will fall apart.*
