I stood in the freezing rain, the wooden rosary cutting into my palm.

Four armed men. Marcus had his hands up. Lucy was crying silently in the backseat.

I had thirty seconds before they ripped a twelve-year-old deaf girl out of the car.

I thought of my own daughter. I thought of the terror Lucy must be feeling.

“You don’t want her,” I said. My voice was surprisingly steady.

The lead man stopped and looked at me, amused. “Is that right, sweetheart?”

“She’s deaf,” I lied smoothly, stepping slightly in front of the open car door. “She’s completely deaf and mute. She requires specialized medication every four hours for a neurological condition. If she misses a dose, she goes into violent seizures. Do you want a seizing child in the back of your car while you negotiate with Adrian Marzano?”

The man frowned, glancing at Lucy. Lucy, reading my body language, instinctively huddled deeper into her blanket, looking fragile and terrified.

“I’m her medical proxy,” I continued, taking a step toward the men. “Take me instead. I know the codes to Adrian’s private accounts. I know where he keeps the physical bearer bonds. You take the girl, Adrian goes to war and kills you all. You take me, you get the money without the liability of a sick kid.”

The man stared at me. He weighed the options. A screaming, seizing kid, or the maid who knew the safe combinations.

“Get in the trunk,” he ordered.

“Rachel, don’t do this,” Marcus growled.

I didn't look at Marcus. I looked back at Lucy.

I signed quickly, keeping my hands low where the men couldn’t see clearly in the dark.

“Tell your dad. Aunt’s rosary. I will find Owen.”

Lucy nodded, tears streaming down her face.

I walked toward the black sedan. The trunk popped open. It smelled like oil and damp carpet.

I climbed in. The lid slammed shut, plunging me into absolute, suffocating darkness.

The car accelerated hard, throwing me against the side panel.

For twenty minutes, I lay in the dark, my mind racing.

I had just traded my life for my boss's daughter. If I didn't find a way out of this, my own daughter would grow up without a mother.

The car finally stopped.

The trunk opened. Harsh industrial lights blinded me.

Rough hands grabbed my arms and hauled me out.

We were inside an abandoned shipping warehouse. The smell of rust and river water was overwhelming.

They dragged me into a small, glass-walled office in the center of the warehouse.

Sitting in a folding chair in the corner of the office was Owen.

He looked up. His face was dirty, and he had been crying, but he was unhurt.

“Rachel?” he signed, his small hands trembling.

“I’m here, buddy,” I signed back, forcing a reassuring smile.

The lead enforcer shoved me into a chair across from the boy.

“Alright, sweetheart,” the man said, pulling out a tactical knife. “Start talking. Where are the bearer bonds?”

Before I could answer, the glass door to the office swung open.

A woman walked in.

She was impeccably dressed in a tailored black coat, her silver hair perfectly styled.

It was Adrian’s aunt. Eleanor.

She looked at me, then at Owen. She didn't look malicious. She looked exhausted.

“You shouldn't have brought the maid,” Eleanor said to the enforcer.

“She said she knows the safe codes,” the man replied defensively.

Eleanor sighed. “She’s lying. Adrian doesn't share codes with the help.”

She looked directly at me.

“I’m sorry you got pulled into this, Rachel. But you understand, I had to protect the family.”

“By kidnapping your own nephew?” I asked, disgusted.

“By removing him from Adrian’s care,” Eleanor corrected gently. “Adrian is blinded by his grief for Sarah. He was going to hand the entire Marzano empire over to Brielle Ashton—a woman who is actively working with the Chicago syndicate to dismantle us from the inside.”

Reversal.

Eleanor wasn't working with the syndicate to extort Adrian.

She was using them to force Adrian’s hand.

“Brielle is the leak,” Eleanor said quietly. “She is the one who forged the medical papers. She gave them to her brother Thomas to execute. I simply intercepted the drop-off and brought Owen here to keep him safe from her.”

I stared at her. “Then why ask Adrian for three million dollars?”

Eleanor smiled thinly.

“I didn't ask for money. I asked him to bring the ledgers. The proof of Brielle’s treason.”

Suddenly, the warehouse lights flickered and died.

Absolute pitch black.

A heavy, suppressed gunshot shattered the silence. The glass wall of the office exploded.
