Adrian did not remember leaving the police station.

He remembered sitting in his car.

He remembered Thomas asking whether he was capable of driving.

He remembered handing over the keys.

Then memory became fragments.

Rachel laughing in their first apartment.

Rachel wearing his college sweatshirt.

Rachel holding Olivia after she was born.

Rachel crying when a doctor told them they had lost their second pregnancy.

Rachel discovering she was pregnant with Emma years later.

Rachel smiling from a hospital bed.

Rachel dying six weeks after Emma entered the world.

For nearly a year, Adrian had blamed himself for not noticing that she was sick.

Doctors had said her condition could have progressed silently.

There had been no reason to question it.

Until now.

Detective Ramirez reopened every available record.

Rachel’s body had been cremated.

There could be no new autopsy.

But there were blood samples preserved by the hospital.

Laboratory specialists requested access.

Rebecca filed emergency motions.

Adrian agreed to everything.

Clara learned from Olivia.

She called Adrian herself.

It was the first time since the slap.

He answered immediately.

“Clara.”

“I heard about Rachel.”

Adrian could not speak.

“I’m sorry.”

“Did you notice anything?”

Clara became quiet.

“What do you mean?”

“Before Rachel died.”

“Anything strange.”

“Anything involving Matthew.”

“Anything involving Vanessa.”

“Vanessa wasn’t around then.”

“I know.”

“What about Matthew?”

Clara thought.

“He visited more than usual.”

“When?”

“After Emma was born.”

“How often?”

“Three or four times a week.”

Adrian sat up.

Matthew had told him he barely visited because hospitals made him uncomfortable.

“Did he ever bring Rachel anything?”

“Flowers.”

“Food.”

“Coffee.”

Clara stopped.

“What?”

Adrian asked.

“One morning.”

“What happened?”

“Rachel said the coffee tasted strange.”

Adrian’s breath caught.

“Did she drink it?”

“A little.”

“She threw it away.”

“Why?”

“She thought the milk had spoiled.”

“Who brought it?”

Clara did not answer immediately.

“Matthew.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Anything else?”

“There was medication.”

His eyes opened.

“What medication?”

“Rachel had pills after giving birth.”

“Pain medication?”

“Yes.”

“And heart medication later.”

“Matthew once brought them upstairs.”

Adrian gripped the phone.

“Why?”

“He said he picked them up for her.”

“I thought you knew.”

“I didn’t.”

The silence became unbearable.

Clara spoke softly.

“Adrian.”

“Yes?”

“If Matthew did something to Rachel…”

Her voice broke.

Adrian pressed his fist against his mouth.

“I know.”

“No.”

“You don’t.”

Clara took a breath.

“You cannot blame yourself for something you didn’t know.”

The words affected him more than they should have.

Especially coming from her.

“I should have known.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because I should.”

“No.”

Clara’s voice strengthened.

“You should have listened to people who were standing in front of you.”

“That’s different from knowing a secret someone spent years hiding.”

Adrian stared at the floor.

“Why are you defending me?”

“I’m not.”

Clara answered.

“I’m telling you the truth.”

A pause.

“Those are not the same thing.”

The laboratory analysis took four days.

Four days of silence.

Four days of reporters appearing outside Mercer Development after Matthew’s arrest became public.

Four days of Vanessa’s attorney claiming the stroller incident had been misunderstood.

Then Detective Ramirez came to Adrian’s house.

She did not sit.

Adrian knew immediately.

“What did they find?”

Ramirez placed the report on the table.

“A compound that was not included in Rachel’s original medical report.”

Adrian’s face went numb.

“What compound?”

“A medication capable of worsening cardiac rhythm problems.”

“Was it prescribed to her?”

“No.”

“Could it have contributed to her death?”

“Yes.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

Ramirez continued.

“We cannot yet prove who administered it.”

“But Rachel Mercer’s death is no longer being treated as purely natural.”

Olivia was standing at the doorway.

Adrian had not seen her.

She covered her mouth.

“Mom?”

Adrian turned.

Olivia’s face collapsed.

“Someone hurt Mom?”

He crossed the room.

She stepped into his arms.

For the first time since she was a little girl, Olivia cried against his chest without trying to hide it.

And while Adrian held her, he realized this was no longer just about what Vanessa had tried to do to Emma.

The nightmare had begun years earlier.
