Vanessa walked slowly toward the sofa.
She sat down as though Adrian had merely asked an uncomfortable question over dinner.
Clara remained standing.
Adrian noticed that she was holding her left arm strangely.
“Are you hurt?”
“I’m fine.”
“You hit the railing.”
“I said I’m fine.”
Her answer was sharper than he had ever heard from her.
Adrian deserved it.
Vanessa sighed.
“This has gotten completely out of control.”
Adrian stared at her.
“You pushed a stroller containing my eleven-month-old daughter down a staircase.”
“No.”
“You pushed the stroller.”
“I moved it.”
“Toward the stairs.”
“I didn’t know the brake was off.”
Clara stared at her in disbelief.
“You released the brake.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“You’re confused.”
“I watched you.”
“You were in the kitchen.”
“I saw your hand.”
Vanessa turned back toward Adrian.
“This is exactly what she does.”
“What does she do?”
“She twists things.”
Clara’s eyes widened.
Vanessa continued.
“She has been trying to turn Olivia against me for months.”
“That isn’t true.”
“Of course you’d say that.”
Adrian felt something cold settle inside his chest.
He remembered conversations.
Little moments.
Vanessa telling him Clara was becoming too attached to Emma.
Vanessa suggesting Olivia relied too heavily on the nanny.
Vanessa complaining that Clara behaved as though she owned the house.
He had dismissed most of it as personality conflict.
Now those conversations looked different.
“Why did you tell me Clara pushed the stroller?”
Vanessa did not answer.
“Why?”
“Because I panicked.”
“You accused an innocent woman.”
“I thought she caused it.”
“You were standing ten feet away.”
“She was holding Emma.”
“Because she saved her.”
Vanessa stood.
“Adrian, listen to me.”
“No.”
He lifted his phone.
“I’m calling the police.”
Vanessa rushed forward.
“Wait.”
Clara flinched.
Adrian noticed.
He stepped between them.
Vanessa stopped.
“I said wait.”
“You have had enough time.”
“You’re going to destroy everything over an accident?”
“An accident doesn’t explain the lie.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
Adrian dialed.
Vanessa reached for the phone.
He pulled it away.
“Do not touch me.”
Something in his voice made her freeze.
The police dispatcher answered.
Adrian gave the address.
He explained that there had been an incident involving his infant daughter.
He explained that he had video footage.
He explained that the person responsible was still inside the home.
When the call ended, Vanessa stared at him.
“You’ll regret this.”
Adrian looked at her.
“That sounds like a threat.”
“It’s a warning.”
Clara spoke quietly.
“Adrian.”
He turned.
She looked pale.
Her left hand was shaking now.
“What?”
“My shoulder.”
Her knees suddenly weakened.
Adrian caught her before she hit the floor.
Clara sucked in a painful breath.
“Don’t touch my arm.”
Adrian carefully supported her back.
“Olivia!”
The bedroom door upstairs opened.
“What happened?”
“Call an ambulance.”
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“She’s acting.”
Adrian turned toward her so quickly that she stepped backward.
“Say that again.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Clara closed her eyes.
“I don’t need an ambulance.”
“You may have injured your shoulder.”
“I’m okay.”
“No, you’re not.”
Adrian looked at the red mark on her face again.
His red mark.
His mistake.
His shame.
And something inside him cracked.
The sirens arrived six minutes later.
Two police officers entered first.
Paramedics followed.
Vanessa immediately changed.
Her voice softened.
Her tears returned.
Her hands started trembling.
“Thank God you’re here.”
One officer looked at Adrian.
“What happened?”
Vanessa answered before he could.
“It was a misunderstanding.”
Olivia came down the stairs carrying her laptop.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
She held the laptop against her chest.
“It wasn’t.”
The officer turned toward her.
Olivia pointed at Vanessa.
“She tried to hurt my sister.”
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
Olivia continued.
“And that isn’t the only video I found.”
