In the kitchen, over a quiet breakfast of black coffee and toast, Daniel stared at the digital tablet displaying the regulatory notice while Claire—who had driven over early after hearing the news—paced back and forth across the hardwood floor.

"A state audit out of nowhere?" Claire exclaimed, throwing her hands up in frustration. "Genevieve couldn't possibly have enough pull in the state legislature to trigger a full commission review overnight."

"She didn't do it alone," Daniel replied calmly, tapping the screen to scroll through the filing details. "She’s working with the old state transport committee—the same bureaucratic network Patricia used to lean on before her estate was seized. They’re trying to freeze our operational accounts under the guise of an emergency compliance check."

I walked over, placing a gentle hand on Daniel's shoulder. "How long before they can freeze our primary funds?"

"Forty-eight hours," Daniel said, looking up at me with absolute resolve in his stormy eyes. "Unless we produce an independent forensic audit proving that every cent of the company's capital is accounted for and untainted by Patricia's past transactions."

"That requires digging through twenty years of classified municipal ledgers," Claire said, stopping her pacing. "Ledgers that were supposedly sealed when the district court settled the estate."

"Sealed for the public, maybe," a quiet voice echoed from the doorway.

We all turned. Mia stood there holding her small stuffed rabbit, rubbing her eyes sleepily, looking much older and wiser than her years.

"What do you mean, sweetie?" I asked, kneeling down beside her.

"In Daddy's big study," Mia pointed down the hall. "In the secret drawer behind the green books where you keep the old keys. Uncle Marcus put a big metal box in there last winter when the bad men went away."

Daniel and I exchanged a sharp look. Marcus had indeed secured several contingency files before Patricia's downfall, storing them in a reinforced vault drawer behind the library shelving—a hidden compartment even Daniel had temporarily forgotten in the wake of our newfound peace.
