When we finally returned to Raven Hill, the heavy iron gates swung open automatically, welcoming us into the quiet, warm embrace of our home.
Mia was waiting on the front porch, sitting on the top step with her drawing pad open. As we stepped out of the car, she jumped up and ran down the gravel path straight toward us.
I knelt down just in time to catch her in my arms, burying my face in her soft hair as she squeezed my neck tightly.
"Did you beat the bad people, Mommy?" she asked softly, looking up with wide, trusting eyes.
"We sure did, sweet girl," I whispered, kissing her cheek. "Nobody is ever going to take our home away from us."
Daniel walked up behind us, resting a heavy, comforting hand on both our shoulders. He looked out past the gates toward the rolling Ashport hills, where the sun was beginning to set in a brilliant blaze of gold and amber.
The shadows of the past had finally been swept away, leaving behind a horizon as wide and bright as we had always dreamed. Our family was safe, our home was secure, and our future was entirely our own.
