Nathaniel’s boots made no sound on the thick Persian rug as he approached us, but his presence hit the room like a sudden drop in barometric pressure. The two hundred wealthy guests of Chicago’s high society, who had been laughing and sipping vintage wine seconds earlier, shrank back toward the mirrored walls.

Vanessa immediately smoothed her silk dress, adjusting her stance to look composed. Her sharp demeanor vanished, replaced by an expression of gentle concern.

"Nathaniel, darling," Vanessa sighed softly, stepping toward him with an apologetic smile. "I'm so sorry you had to see this unpleasant commotion. Elena’s daughter wandered into the main hall and ruined the dessert display. I was simply explaining to her that rules are rules."

Nathaniel didn't look at Vanessa. His eyes were locked on Lily, who was trembling against my legs, her dark curls hiding her face. He knelt on one knee in front of my daughter, completely ignoring the dust on the polished floor.

"Lily," Nathaniel said gently, his deep voice carrying a strange, raw warmth. "Are you hurt?"

Lily looked up, her brown eyes shiny with unshed tears. She held out her small hand, showing her chocolate-stained finger. "I didn't break anything, Mr. Cross. I just wanted a strawberry."

Nathaniel’s jaw clenched. He reached out and gently brushed a speck of chocolate from her thumb with his white linen pocket square. "I know, sweetheart. You didn't do anything wrong."

When he stood up, the warmth in his face turned to sheer arctic cold. He turned slowly toward Vanessa.

"You grabbed a four-year-old child," Nathaniel said quietly.

"She was trespassing in the main reception, Nathaniel!" Vanessa argued, her voice rising slightly in defense. "We are hosting the board of directors and the state governor tonight! What does it look like if staff children are running wild touching the food? I was protecting your image!"

"My image is not protected by cruel women, Vanessa," Nathaniel replied coldly.

Vanessa’s face turned bright red. She opened her mouth to argue, but Nathaniel’s eyes shifted past her, landing on the ornate mahogany table near the fountain.

Tucked neatly behind a massive arrangement of white orchids and ice buckets was a thick, leather-bound red folder.

Vanessa noticed where he was looking, and for a split second, sheer panic flickered in her eyes. She made a subtle move to step between Nathaniel and the table, but it was too late.

Nathaniel walked past her, picked up the red folder, and flipped it open.

Inside were dozens of printed pages, bank transfer slips, private investigator logs, and hidden camera photographs. For five months, someone had been meticulously tracking every dollar leaving Cross Meridian Hospitality’s charity fund—and tracking every private interaction inside the estate when Nathaniel was away on business trips.

Nathaniel’s eyes skimmed the pages. As he read, his face drained of all color.

"What is this?" Nathaniel asked, his voice deathly quiet.

Vanessa swallowed hard, her confidence visibly crumbling. "Nathaniel... that's private personal paperwork. Where did you get that?"

"I didn't get it," Nathaniel said, turning the folder so the guests near the front could see the top page. "It was placed here twenty minutes ago. And it details three million dollars embezzled from the employee healthcare fund over the last six months—transferred directly into offshore accounts owned by Lowell Investments."

A collective gasp echoed across the grand ballroom. Vanessa’s father, sitting near the governor at a round table, suddenly stood up, knocking his wine glass over.

"And that's not all," Nathaniel continued, his voice echoing under the high ceilings. "This log documents how staff members who fell ill or asked for time off were systematically threatened, docked pay, and forced into silence by your personal assistant, Vanessa."

He looked directly at me. "Including Elena."

Vanessa took a step back, her hands shaking. "That’s a lie! Someone is framing me! Elena put that folder there! She’s trying to ruin our wedding because she wants more money!"

Nathaniel closed the red folder with a heavy thud that sounded like a courtroom gavel.

"The wedding is off," Nathaniel declared, his voice ringing through the silent ballroom. "Security, escort Miss Lowell and her family off my property immediately."
