The top floor of Cross Meridian Hospitality’s downtown skyscraper commanded a panoramic view of the Chicago skyline and the dark waters of Lake Michigan. Inside the glass-walled boardroom, fifteen powerful board members sat around an oval marble table, their faces grim.
At the far end of the table sat Richard Lowell, Vanessa’s father, flanked by three high-powered corporate attorneys.
When the heavy doors swung open, Nathaniel walked in, dressed in a sharp dark suit. I walked directly behind him, carrying a leather briefcase filled with original financial ledgers.
Richard Lowell stood up immediately, pointing an angry finger at Nathaniel.
"This is an absurdity!" Richard barked. "Nathaniel, you canceled a multi-billion-dollar corporate merger and publicly disgraced my family over the wild accusations of a common maid!"
The board members murmured nervously, looking at me with skepticism.
Nathaniel didn't take a seat. He stood at the head of the table, resting his hands flat on the polished marble.
"Elena Rossi is not a maid, Richard. She is the General Manager of my estate, and a key witness in a federal fraud investigation," Nathaniel said coldly. "Elena, present the documents."
I stepped forward, swallowing my nerves. I had spent the entire helicopter ride reviewing the financial ledgers with Nathaniel, memorizing every transaction number and bank code.
I opened the briefcase, pulling out three thick stacks of audited financial reports, and distributed them to every board member.
"Gentlemen," I began, my voice steady despite the high-stakes environment. "For eighteen months, Lowell Management Services billed Cross Meridian Hospitality for premium estate maintenance, security upgrades, and staff healthcare programs. However, secondary banking records show that forty percent of those funds were diverted."
Richard sneered. "These are fabricated numbers! She’s trying to save her own skin!"
"They are not fabricated," I replied calmly, pulling a highlighted bank statement from my file. "These wire transfers bear your personal signature, Mr. Lowell. Three million dollars were funneled directly into shell companies in the Cayman Islands registered under your daughter’s name, Vanessa Lowell."
One of the senior board members, a harsh elderly man named Arthur Vance, picked up the statement and scrutinized it through his reading glasses.
"Good lord," Vance muttered, looking up at Richard in disgust. "The signatures match the corporate registry. You were stealing from our private healthcare reserves!"
"It was a temporary loan!" Richard stammered, his face turning pale as he realized he had been backed into a corner. "We were going to repay it as soon as the merger went through!"
"You weren't going to repay anything," Nathaniel interjected, his voice like iron. "You were using my company's assets to cover up your firm's massive real estate losses in Europe. You used your daughter's engagement to get close to my books."
Nathaniel looked around the table at the silent board members. "Richard Lowell is hereby removed from the board. Cross Meridian Hospitality is severing all ties with Lowell Investments, and we are filing a criminal complaint for corporate espionage and grand larceny."
"You can't do this to me, Nathaniel!" Richard roared, slamming his fist on the table. "My family built this city! I will ruin you! I will destroy that woman and her brat!"
Nathaniel stepped right into Richard’s face, his towering frame completely intimidating the older man.
"If you ever threaten Elena or her daughter again, Richard," Nathaniel warned in a terrifying whisper, "I won't just take your company. I will make sure you spend the rest of your life in a federal penitentiary. Get out of my building."
Security guards stepped into the room, grabbing Richard Lowell by his arms and escorting him out of the boardroom as he shouted curses into the hallway.
The board members stood up one by one, shaking Nathaniel’s hand and apologizing for ever doubting him. Arthur Vance walked over to me, offering a respectful nod.
"Impressive work, Miss Rossi," Vance said. "You handled that with absolute professionalism."
"Thank you, sir," I replied, feeling a surge of pride and confidence I hadn't felt in years.
When the room cleared out, Nathaniel turned to me, a proud smile warming his features.
"You were incredible in there," he said softly.
"I had a good teacher," I smiled back.
Nathaniel walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the city lights. "Come here, Elena."
I walked over and stood beside him. The city below looked vast and endless, glittering like diamonds against the dark night.
"For years, I thought my life was completely defined by business, contracts, and corporate growth," Nathaniel admitted quietly, looking down at me. "I was living in an empty house, surrounded by fake people who only wanted my money. But in just twenty-four hours, you and Lily have given that house a soul."
He reached out, taking my hand in his. His grip was warm, solid, and reassuring.
"I don't want you to just manage my estate, Elena," Nathaniel whispered, his eyes searching mine with intense vulnerability. "I want to build a life with you."
My heart hammered in my chest. "Nathaniel... we come from two completely different worlds. What will people say?"
"Let them talk," Nathaniel said, leaning in closer, his lips just inches from mine. "I don't care about their opinions anymore. I only care about you."
Before I could answer, his phone buzzed sharply on the table.
It was an urgent security alert from the estate.
ALERT: PERIMETER BREACH AT LAKE FOREST ESTATE. EAST WING SENSORS ACTIVATED.
My blood ran cold. "Lily!" I gasped. "Lily is in the East Wing!"
