Frank Delaney had protected the Cole family for eleven years.

He had driven Eleanor to charity events.

Checked windows after storms.

Walked Mara to her car after late shifts.

Adrian trusted him with alarm codes, travel schedules, and the keys to nearly every door on the estate.

Now Daniel was calling him the mastermind.

“No,” Adrian said.

Daniel looked exhausted.

“I heard Vanessa say his name.”

“That’s not proof.”

“I saw them together.”

“Where?”

“At the old carriage house.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

The carriage house sat at the far edge of the estate, beyond the formal gardens.

It was rarely used.

Security cameras there had failed repeatedly over the last year.

Frank had always blamed aging wiring.

Adrian stepped into the hallway and called Noah.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then Mara called.

Adrian picked up immediately.

“Where are you?”

“At Noah’s guesthouse.”

“Is Noah there?”

“No. He left twenty minutes ago.”

“Why?”

“He said Frank needed help at the estate.”

Adrian’s stomach dropped.

“Lock the doors.”

“What?”

“Lock everything. Do not open the door for anyone.”

“Adrian—”

“Now.”

He heard her moving.

A lock clicked.

Then another.

“Done.”

“Get away from the windows.”

Mara’s breathing quickened.

“What happened?”

“Frank may be involved.”

Silence.

Then a knock sounded through her phone.

Three calm knocks.

Mara whispered, “Someone’s here.”

Adrian was already running toward the exit.

“Don’t answer it.”

Another knock.

Then Frank’s voice came faintly through the door.

“Mara? It’s Frank. Adrian asked me to take you somewhere safe.”

Mara’s breath stopped.

Adrian shouted into the phone.

“Do not open that door!”

Frank knocked again.

“Mara, I know you’re in there.”

Adrian reached the parking garage.

“Call 911.”

“I am.”

He heard a soft metallic sound.

Mara whispered, “He’s using a key.”

Adrian’s blood froze.

“Noah’s house key?”

The lock clicked.

Mara ran.

Her footsteps pounded through the phone.

A door slammed.

Frank entered the house.

“Mara?”

His voice was closer now.

Calm.

Almost kind.

“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.”

Adrian drove out of the garage so fast the tires screamed.

“Mara, where are you?”

“Bedroom.”

“Barricade it.”

“I did.”

A heavy impact hit the door.

Mara gasped.

Another impact.

Wood cracked.

Adrian called Noah on another line.

Finally, Noah answered.

“Adrian?”

“Frank is at your house.”

“What?”

“He’s trying to get to Mara.”

Noah cursed.

“I’m ten minutes away.”

Adrian looked at the highway.

“I’m forty.”

Then the line with Mara went silent.

“Mara?”

Nothing.

“Mara!”

A man picked up.

Frank.

His voice was low.

“Come home, Adrian.”

Then he hung up.
