Vanessa looked smaller without expensive clothes.

No tailored dress.

No perfect hair.

No diamond earrings.

Just a gray detention uniform and tired eyes.

Mara sat beside the prosecutor.

Adrian sat across the room.

Vanessa looked at Mara first.

“I’m sorry.”

Mara’s face did not change.

“You already said that.”

“No. I said I could have held on.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

Vanessa nodded.

“You’re right.”

The prosecutor folded her hands.

“Ms. Hart, you asked for this meeting.”

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

“Frank kept records outside the country.”

“Where?”

“A storage company in Montreal. Under a fake corporation.”

“Why should we believe you?”

“You shouldn’t.”

That answer surprised everyone.

Vanessa continued.

“You should verify it.”

She slid a paper across the table.

Account numbers.

Access codes.

A name.

Adrian glanced at it.

“Why now?”

Vanessa looked toward the window.

“Because Frank was going to kill me.”

“That bothered you more than Eleanor?”

She flinched.

“Yes.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

At least she did not lie.

Vanessa looked at Mara.

“I hated you.”

“I know.”

“No. You don’t.”

Mara said nothing.

“You were everything Eleanor respected.”

“That wasn’t my fault.”

“I know that now.”

“Do you?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I used to think people like you were pretending. Quiet. decent. loyal. I thought it was an act because everything I did was an act.”

Mara’s voice stayed calm.

“And when I fell?”

Vanessa began to cry.

“I had your wrist.”

Adrian looked away.

“I could feel you slipping.”

Mara’s hands curled into fists.

“You looked at me.”

“Yes.”

“And you let go.”

“Yes.”

The room was silent.

Mara leaned forward.

“Why?”

Vanessa’s answer came out barely above a whisper.

“Because for one second, I thought if you were gone, everything would become simple again.”

Mara closed her eyes.

A tear ran down one cheek.

Then she stood.

Adrian moved instinctively, but she lifted one hand.

She did not need rescuing.

Not now.

She looked down at Vanessa.

“You don’t get forgiveness because you finally told the truth.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.”

“But I hope prison gives you enough quiet to hear yourself clearly.”

Then Mara walked out.

Adrian followed.

In the hallway, she leaned against the wall.

Her whole body shook.

He did not touch her until she reached for his hand.

Then he held it.

Nothing more.

The prosecutor stepped out a minute later.

“The Montreal information checks out.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Frank’s network is bigger than we thought.”

“And Vanessa?”

“She’ll plead guilty and cooperate.”

Mara wiped her face.

“Is it over?”

The prosecutor hesitated.

“For you? Almost.”

Adrian’s phone buzzed.

A message from the estate.

The old greenhouse camera had detected motion.

Adrian opened the feed.

A man stood beneath Eleanor’s brass clock.

Luis.

He looked directly into the camera and held up a sealed box.

On it, Eleanor had written:

FOR ADRIAN AND MARA—ONLY AFTER THE TRUTH IS OUT.
