Adrian picked up the pearl earring without speaking.

Vanessa appeared in the doorway behind him.

“That proves nothing.”

He turned the earring between his fingers.

“You told me you lost this in Boston.”

“I thought I did.”

“Mara says the safe was opened tonight.”

“So?”

“So why is your earring inside it?”

Vanessa’s face tightened. “Your mother hated me. She could have put it there.”

“My mother died six months ago.”

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

“Exactly.”

Mara stood behind Adrian now, one hand holding the doorframe for balance.

Adrian looked at her. “You should be sitting down.”

“I will when you listen.”

“I’m listening.”

Mara took a breath. “The night Eleanor died, there was an hour missing from the security system.”

Adrian stared at her.

“What?”

“I noticed it two weeks later.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I tried.”

That answer hit him harder than the fall.

“When?”

“The morning after the funeral. You were in the library. Vanessa was with you.”

Adrian remembered the morning.

Barely.

Everything after his mother’s death existed in his memory like a room filled with smoke.

“You came in,” he said slowly.

“Yes.”

“You said you needed to talk to me.”

“And Vanessa said it could wait.”

Adrian looked at his fiancée.

Vanessa lifted her chin. “You were grieving.”

Mara’s voice broke. “Then she came to my room and told me if I ever brought it up again, I’d be fired and blacklisted from every estate-management job in Connecticut.”

Adrian turned fully toward Vanessa.

“Did you threaten her?”

“No.”

Mara pulled out her phone.

“I recorded the second conversation.”

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

Adrian held out his hand.

Mara hesitated.

“Play it,” he said.

She did.

Vanessa’s recorded voice filled the study.

Low.

Controlled.

unmistakable.

“You work here because Eleanor liked you. Eleanor is gone. If you want to keep your career, you’ll forget the camera glitch and stay out of family business.”

The recording ended.

Adrian didn’t move.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Not guilt.

Calculation.

“Anyone can fake audio now.”

Mara gave a stunned laugh. “That’s your answer?”

“It is when someone is trying to destroy my life.”

Adrian pressed his thumb against the pearl until its metal edge hurt.

“What camera glitch?”

Mara looked at him.

“The security system stopped recording between 9:12 and 10:17 the night your mother collapsed.”

Adrian’s heart started pounding.

His mother had been found unconscious at 10:21.

Vanessa had told him she had been upstairs taking a bath.

Mara whispered, “There’s one more thing.”

Adrian waited.

“The system wasn’t broken.”

“How do you know?”

“Because somebody used the administrator code to shut it off manually.”

Adrian’s blood went cold.

Only three people had that code.

Him.

His mother.

And Vanessa.
