Outside, the first faint streaks of gray dawn were beginning to cut through the heavy winter snow clouds over the Hudson River.
Elias hung up the secure phone with a deliberate, calm motion. He turned to me, his expression transitioning from a ruthless syndicate leader into a general preparing for the final, decisive battle of a war.
“Victor thinks he holds all the cards because he filed fraudulent custody and trafficking warrants through corrupted federal contacts,” Elias said, buttoning his charcoal-gray wool coat. “He expects my penthouse to be swarmed by law enforcement in fifteen minutes, forcing me to run.”
I stood up, adjusting the woolen blanket around my sleeping babies. “And are we going to run?”
A slow, humorless smile touched the corners of Elias’s mouth.
“I don't run from rats, Ava,” he replied quietly. “We’re going to welcome our guests. But not the police.”
Within ten minutes, a convoy of six unmarked armored transport vehicles rolled silently into the underground subterranean garage of the Vance estate. Elite operatives in tactical gear swarmed out, loading encrypted data drives into portable transmitters.
Elias led me down to the secure command bunker situated three floors beneath the penthouse—a massive, high-tech control center filled with wall-to-wall monitors displaying live satellite feeds of every warehouse, dock, and front company controlled by Blackwood across New York and New Jersey.
“What is this?” I asked, staring at the flashing data streams.
“This is the nervous system of Blackwood’s entire empire,” Elias explained, walking up to the central master console. “For three years, while Victor and his handlers spied on my operations, my cyber intelligence division quietly mapped every single illegal transaction, tax evasion scheme, and offshore bank account belonging to Blackwood’s syndicate.”
Elias placed his hand on the master biometric scanner.
“With a single keystroke, we don't just defeat Victor in court,” Elias said, his voice dropping into a lethal register. “We erase Blackwood from the financial map of the United States.”
At that exact moment, the heavy steel security doors of the penthouse above echoed with the thunderous pounding of federal battering rams.
“FBI! Open the door! Federal warrant for child abduction and racketeering!” shouted a megaphone through the shattered lobby intercom.
I gripped my babies tighter, my heart racing. “Elias... the feds are here.”
Elias didn't look up from the console. He simply pressed his thumb against the biometric scanner and hit the physical master enter key.
“Let them in,” Elias whispered. “And let them see what kind of monsters they’ve been taking orders from.”
