The private penthouse suite at the top of Moretti Tower was bathed in the warm, brilliant gold of a magnificent autumn sunset over Boston Harbor.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, wearing a breathtaking white silk wedding dress—custom-designed, elegant, and entirely my own—looking out over the sprawling, beautiful expanse of the city skyline and the glittering waters of the harbor where my life had once seemingly fallen apart.
Footsteps approached softly from behind.
Dante wrapped his arms around me from behind, resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder while his hands gently cradled my waist. Down below, the lights of the South Boston waterfront pavilion began to twinkle one by one like fallen stars.
“Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Moretti?” Dante whispered, his voice rich and steady.
I leaned back against him, smiling as I placed my hands over his. “I was just thinking about that horrible afternoon in Ballroom C. The empty chairs, the whispers, the broken bouquet...”
“A terrible day for everyone else,” Dante murmured, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to the crown of my head. “And the greatest lucky break of my life.”
“It really was,” I agreed softly, turning around in his arms to look up into his face. “If someone had told me back then that the most feared man in Boston would rescue me from my own wedding, I would have laughed until I cried.”
Dante’s expression turned completely serious. He reached up, gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear, his dark eyes shining with absolute, unwavering devotion.
“I didn't rescue you, June,” Dante said quietly, his voice ringing with profound truth. Yamaguchi had taught him many things, but loving me was entirely his own choice. “You rescued yourself the moment you walked out of that ballroom with your head held high. I was just smart enough to make sure you never had to walk alone again.”
Outside the reinforced glass, the lights of Boston stretched out toward the horizon in brilliant strokes of gold and silver.
The scars of the past were gone, replaced by the unbreakable strength of a future we had built together, petal by petal, stone by stone.
And as Dante pulled me tight against his chest, kissing me with all the fierce, unconditional love in the world, I knew that no matter what storms ever tried to roll across the harbor, I was finally, completely, and eternally safe.
