Inside the master suite—a room decorated in soothing tones of cream and pale gray, guarded by two armed private security operatives standing silently in the hallway—Sofia finally drifted into a heavily medicated sleep. A private plastic surgeon Alexander had summoned at dawn had stitched her split lip and administered treatment for the severe bruising across her face and arms.
I sat in a velvet armchair by the window, watching the morning light glint off the polished hood of the security patrols circling the circular driveway below.
The heavy mahogany door clicked open, and Alexander stepped inside, carrying a steaming cup of black coffee. He looked immaculate despite having spent the entire night awake in his private study, coordinating a multi-million-dollar financial execution. His tie was back in place, his charcoal suit pressed, and his expression carved from granite.
He handed me the cup before taking a seat across from me.
"How is she?" he asked softly, glancing toward the king-sized bed where Sofia’s pale face rested against the pristine white pillows.
"Asleep, finally," I replied, wrapping my hands around the warm ceramic mug. "The doctor said the physical injuries will heal in a few weeks. But the shock… that’s going to take longer."
Alexander took a slow sip of his coffee, his eyes narrowing as he stared out the window.
"It won't take long once she sees the news," he said coldly.
"What did you do?" I asked, though I already knew the answer.
"Everything," Alexander replied simply. "By midnight, Arthur had frozen all corporate accounts held by Carmen’s husband, Richard Robles, through their family shipping logistics firm. By 2:00 AM, our commercial real estate division recalled every single commercial lease they held in downtown Dallas, giving them forty-eight hours to vacate their corporate offices or face immediate bankruptcy liquidation."
He set his coffee cup down on the marble side table with a sharp click.
"And as for Javier… well, my general counsel personally delivered a termination notice to the senior partners of Sterling & Vance at 6:00 AM. By 7:00 AM, Javier Robles was fired for gross ethical misconduct and violation of professional standards. His law license is currently under emergency review by the state bar association."
I stared at him, feeling a grim wave of satisfaction wash over me. "And the asNextlt charges?"
"The Dallas Police Department’s major crimes division is executing an arrest warrant for Carmen Robles as we speak," Alexander said, his voice completely devoid of pity. "AsNextlt causing bodily injury, conspiracy to commit extortion, and unlawful restraint. They’re picking her up from her country club home right now."
Just then, my phone buzzed violently on the table.
I picked it up. The screen flashed with an incoming call from an unknown number. I hesitated, then pressed accept and put it on speaker so Alexander could hear.
"Hello?" I answered coldly.
"Elena! Oh, thank God, Elena, you have to help us!"
It wasn't Carmen. It was Javier.
His voice, usually so smooth, confident, and patronizing, was cracked, frantic, and dripping with hysterical panic. In the background, I could hear the faint, muffled sound of shouting and weeping—sounds of a high-society household completely collapsing in real-time.
"Javier," I said evenly. "Last time I checked, you were on your honeymoon."
"Elena, please!" Javier sobbed, his voice breaking. "It’s a nightmare! I don't know what's happening! All our bank accounts—frozen! My law firm just fired me by email, and they're demanding the return of my signing bonus! My mother… the police are at the front door with a warrant! They're arresting her—they're putting handcuffs on my mother in front of the neighbors!"
I looked across the room at Alexander, who was leaning back in his chair with his arms crossed, watching me with a cold, mocking smirk.
"That’s unfortunate, Javier," I replied smoothly. "You should have thought of that before you stood outside a hotel door while your mother beat my daughter forty times with a shoe."
There was a terrifying, suffocating silence on the other end of the line.
"W-what?" Javier stammered, his voice dropping into a breathless whisper. "How… how do you know about that?"
"Because unlike you, Javier, I actually care about my child," I said, my voice hardening into steel. "Where is she? Where is your son of a bitch father? Where are the aunts who held her down?"
"Elena, please, let's talk!" Javier wailed, panic reaching a shrieking pitch. "It was just a misunderstanding! It was family business! Carmen was just trying to secure the future of the estate—we can apologize to Sofia! We can give her flowers! Just call off whoever is doing this! Please! My father is having chest pains, the police are searching the house, our entire life is being erased—"
"Your life wasn't erased, Javier," I interrupted, my voice sharp as broken glass. "It was never yours to begin with. You built your entire existence on extortion, intimidation, and cruelty. And now, the bill has come due."
"Elena, wait! Don't hang up—"
I tapped the red button, cutting him off mid-sentence, and tossed the phone onto the bed.
The room fell silent once more, save for the soft, rhythmic breathing of our sleeping daughter.
Alexander stood up, walking over to the window where the morning sun now illuminated the sprawling, immaculate grounds of his estate. He turned back to look at me, the hard, ruthless titan softening just enough to reveal the man I had married thirty years ago.
"They thought they could break our daughter," Alexander said quietly, his voice carrying the finality of a supreme court verdict. "They didn't realize they had just signed their own death warrant."
