We had moved Sofia into her new penthouse overlooking Turtle Creek. The apartment was a fortress of glass, steel, and quiet elegance, completely secure from the outside world. Alexander had stationed two elite security operatives in the lobby 24/7, and Arthur handled every single legal loose end, ensuring that neither Javier nor any member of the disgraced Robles family could ever come within five miles of her.

Yet, shadows still lingered.

One evening, I was staying over at the penthouse, sitting quietly in the living room while Sofia slept in her room down the hall. A soft thunderstorm was rolling over Dallas, the distant rumble of thunder echoing against the high-rise windows.

Suddenly, I heard a sharp, stifled gasp coming from down the corridor.

I stood up instantly, rushing down the hallway and pushing open Sofia’s bedroom door.

She was sitting upright in bed, clutching the heavy silk blanket to her chest, breathing in ragged, hysterical gasps. Her eyes were wide and unseeing, locked in a terrifying flashback to the bridal suite at the Crescent Hotel.

"Sofia!" I cried, rushing to the bedside and wrapping my arms around her trembling shoulders. "Baby, look at me! You're safe! You're in your room, you're home!"

She clung to me, sobbing uncontrollably. "Mom… I heard the door lock. I heard Carmen’s voice… she was asking for the deed… and Javier was standing outside laughing…"

"Shh, shh, listen to me," I whispered fiercely, pressing my cheek against her hair. "They are gone, Sofia. Carmen is in a federal holding facility awaiting trial. Javier is bankrupt, disgraced, and running from process servers. They have no power over you. They never did."

She buried her face in my neck, crying until her body shook.

"I feel so stupid, Mom," she choked out. "I let them charm me. I thought… I thought if I was just polite enough, if I tried hard enough, they would accept me."

"You have nothing to be ashamed of for having a good heart, darling," a deep, steady voice said from the doorway.

We both turned. Alexander stood leaning against the doorframe. He had arrived late to check on the security grid, and hearing the commotion, had hurried up. He wasn't wearing his usual tailored jacket; his sleeves were rolled up, revealing strong, scarred forearms.

He walked slowly over to the bed, sitting down on the edge of the mattress opposite me. Carefully, gently, he placed his large, warm hand over Sofia’s cold fingers.

"Listen to your mother, and listen to me," Alexander said, his voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable authority that cut through the panic in the room like a sword. "Cruelty isn't something you can appease with politeness, Sofia. When you encounter a parasite, you don't negotiate with it. You crush it."

Sofia looked up at her father, her tear-stained eyes searching his face.

"They took my wedding night, Dad," she whispered. "They turned the happiest day of my life into a nightmare."

"They didn't ruin your life, sweetheart," Alexander replied softly, his thumb gently wiping a tear from her cheek. "They simply showed you their true colors before you wasted another decade on a fraud. Consider it an expensive, painful lesson—and remember that from this day forward, your name is Sterling. And Sterlings don't break. We conquer."

Sofia took a deep, shuddering breath. Slowly, the wild, frantic terror in her eyes began to settle, replaced by something much stronger, much colder, and infinitely more powerful.

Resilience.

She squeezed her father's hand back.

"I won't let them win," she whispered.

"Good," Alexander said, a fierce, proud smile touching his lips. "Because the preliminary trial for Carmen Robles starts next month. And your mother and I have arranged a front-row seat for you in the courtroom."
