When the USS Nimitz finally docked at Pearl Harbor a week later, I was expecting a routine debriefing and a quiet flight back to Washington.

Instead, I was met on the tarmac by two grim-faced agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

"Admiral Hart," the lead agent said, holding out a sealed folder. "The Chief of Naval Operations requests your immediate presence on a secure video conference. You need to see this before you speak to him."

I took the folder, a cold sense of dread creeping into my stomach.

I climbed into the back of a waiting armored SUV and tore open the seal.

Inside was a printout of an article published on one of the most widely read, sensationalist tabloid websites in the country.

The headline screamed in bold, red letters: "THE ADMIRAL’S DARK SECRET: How Evelyn Hart Destroyed Her Father’s Empire and Stole Her Sister’s Fiancé."

I read through the article, my blood boiling with every fabricated, malicious paragraph.

Caroline had not held back. She had spun a completely fictional, psychotic narrative.

She claimed that I was deeply jealous of her beauty and her relationship. She accused me of using classified military intelligence to frame our father for fraud just to steal his wealth.

Worst of all, she claimed that I had used my rank to coerce Commander Nathan Reed into breaking off the engagement, threatening to ruin his military career if he married her.

It was a blatant, highly orchestrated character assassination.

I arrived at the secure naval facility and walked directly into the communications room.

The screen flickered on, revealing CNO Vance sitting behind his desk in the Pentagon, looking incredibly tired.

"You read the article, Evelyn," Vance said bluntly.

"I did, Sir. It is completely fabricated trash," I replied, keeping my voice level.

"I know it is," the CNO sighed. "The entire Joint Chiefs know it is. Your father is in federal prison because he is a criminal, not because you framed him. And Commander Reed is a decorated tier-one operator, not a coerced victim."

"Then what is the issue, Sir?"

"The issue is optics, Evelyn. You are a public figure now after the freighter rescue. The civilian media is picking up this tabloid story. They love a scandal."

Vance leaned forward, his expression hardening into absolute military resolve.

"I cannot have my top intelligence officer fielding questions from reporters about her jealous sister and a supposed love triangle. It compromises the dignity of the uniform."

"I understand, Sir. Should I issue a public denial?"

"No," Vance said sharply. "You do not argue with pigs in the mud. You are an Admiral. You crush them with the law."

"I have authorized the Navy’s Judge Advocate General corps to assist your personal lawyers. Caroline Vance and that tabloid just accused a federal officer of abusing her rank and manipulating federal investigations."

Vance smiled, a cold, predatory look.

"Burn them to the ground, Evelyn. And do it quickly."
