The crisp morning air of Washington D.C. was a welcome contrast to the toxic atmosphere of my childhood home.
I walked the wide corridors of the Pentagon, the familiar rhythmic clicking of my low heels grounding me in reality.
Every few feet, junior officers and enlisted personnel snapped to attention, saluting as I passed.
I returned their salutes automatically, my mind already shifting to the global intelligence reports waiting on my desk.
This was my world.
This was the family I had chosen when my biological one had deemed me invisible.
I entered my secure office, where my aide, Lieutenant Vance, was waiting with a steaming cup of black coffee and a thick classified folder.
"Good morning, Admiral," Vance said, placing the coffee on my desk.
"You have a secure call from Pacific Command at 0900, and a budget review at 1100."
"Thank you, Vance," I replied, taking a sip of the bitter coffee.
"Also, Ma'am," Vance hesitated, checking his digital tablet.
"You have thirty-four missed calls on your personal device, all originating from the same civilian number."
I sighed, pulling my personal cell phone from my bag.
The screen was flooded with notifications, text messages, and voicemails from Caroline.
I tapped the screen and pressed play on the most recent voicemail.
Caroline’s voice filled the quiet office, frantic and hysterical.
"Evelyn, you need to call me back right now!" she screamed through the speaker.
"Nathan left the dinner right after you did. He wouldn't even speak to me in the car."
"He said he needed time to think about things. To think about things, Evelyn!"
"You ruined my engagement on purpose because you have always been jealous of me!"
"You need to fix this right now and tell him you forgive Dad, or I swear I will never speak to you again!"
I calmly pressed the delete button, erasing the message from my phone.
She still believed she held some sort of leverage over me.
She still believed that the threat of losing her toxic presence was a punishment.
Before I could set the phone down, the secure line on my desk began to flash.
I picked up the heavy receiver.
"Admiral Hart," I answered professionally.
"Admiral, this is Commander Reed," Nathan's deep voice came through the line.
He sounded exhausted, lacking the usual sharp cadence of a SEAL.
"I apologize for contacting you on a secure channel, Ma'am, but I needed to speak with you."
"Is this regarding a mission, Commander?" I asked, keeping a strict professional boundary.
"No, Ma'am," Nathan replied quietly.
"This is regarding the fact that I almost married into a family that treats an American hero like a stray dog."
"I am requesting a brief personal meeting, off the record, if you will allow it."
I leaned back in my leather chair, looking at the glowing maps on my digital monitors.
"Fifteen minutes, Commander. The courtyard cafeteria at 1300 hours."
"Thank you, Admiral."
I hung up the phone, knowing that Caroline's perfect illusion was unraveling faster than she could ever comprehend.
