The lead Marshal's name was Reeves.
I knew him by reputation — twenty-six years of federal service, not a man who rattled easily.
But his hands were shaking as he steadied her.
"I'm fine, Daniel," she said quietly.
"I'm fine."
She wasn't fine.
The mark on her cheek was already darkening.
Miller still didn't understand.
He was twisting against the cruiser hood, red-faced, shouting.
"Get off me!
She crossed a restricted zone!
I was doing my job!"
Marshal Reeves turned around slowly.
The look on his face silenced the entire plaza.
"Do you know who you just str*ck, Officer?"
"I don't care who she—"
"That is the Honorable Cecelia Warren.
She has presided over this courthouse for nineteen years.
She is the judge assigned to the federal trial that starts in that building—" he pointed — "in forty minutes."
The color drained from Miller's face.
"She has her own entrance," Reeves continued, his voice dropping to something dangerous, "because we built one for her.

The last thr3at on her life.
I heard those words and felt the ground shift under me.
Judge Warren picked up one of the scattered papers from the wet pavement.
She looked at it for a long moment, then looked at Miller with an expression I will never forget.
"I've seen men like you before," she said softly.
"I've sentenced them, too."
Then her phone rang.
She glanced at the screen — and whatever she saw made her go completely still.
---
What was on that phone — and what did Judge Warren do next?
