For fourteen months, I had imagined the person responsible for Leo disappearing.

I imagined a stranger.

A monster hiding in the shadows.

Someone who had taken my son away and destroyed my family.

I imagined someone I could hate without hesitation.

But standing in Elena’s living room, staring at Victor Crane, I realized something much worse.

The person I hated was standing in front of me…

And he wanted me to hate myself more.

“You did.””

Victor’s words hung in the room.

I stared at him.

My mind rejected them before my heart even had a chance.

“No.””

Victor tilted his head.

“You remember.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“You opened the door.””

“No.””

“You looked inside.””

“No!””

My voice exploded.

Maya jumped.

Sarah pulled her closer.

I immediately lowered my voice.

“I would never hurt my son.””

Victor watched me carefully.

“That’s not what I said.””

“Then what are you saying?””

He walked farther into the room.

Slowly.

Confidently.

Like he owned every inch of the house.

“I’m saying you were manipulated.””

I froze.

The answer wasn’t what I expected.

“You made me do something?””

Victor smiled slightly.

“Not exactly.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Victor looked at Marcus.

Almost disappointed.

“You always were emotional.””

Marcus’s face tightened.

“You destroyed enough lives.””

Victor ignored him.

His eyes returned to me.

“David, you have spent fourteen months blaming yourself.””

I said nothing.

Because he was right.

Every day.

Every night.

Every moment I looked at Maya.

I blamed myself.

“I watched you break.””

Victor continued.

“I watched you search empty roads.””

My fists clenched.

“I watched you beg strangers for information.””

My breathing became heavier.

“And I watched you ignore the truth sitting right in front of you.””

I looked at Elena.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Why?””

The question was directed at everyone.

“Why did nobody tell me?””

Elena looked down.

“Because we were afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Victor.

“Of him.””

Victor smiled.

“Smart woman.””

I turned toward him.

“You threatened her.””

“No.””

He walked closer.

“She chose.””

Elena shook her head.

“No.””

Victor looked at her.

“You made your choice.””

The way he said it made my stomach twist.

Like he owned a piece of her.

Like she had been trapped for longer than I knew.

I looked at Elena.

“What did he make you do?””

She covered her mouth.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“Fix what?””

She looked at me.

“Everything.””

A painful laugh escaped me.

“You keep saying that.””

I pointed at the floor.

“But my son was under here.””

Her tears fell.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You don’t know.””

I stepped toward her.

“You woke up every morning knowing where he was.””

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“You ate dinner.””

“I know.””

“You slept.””

“I didn’t.””

The answer surprised me.

I stopped.

Elena looked at me.

“David, I didn’t sleep.””

Her voice broke.

“Not once.””

“Then why?””

“Because every night I heard him.””

The room went still.

“You heard Leo?””

She nodded.

“I built this room.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“I built the hidden space.””

Sarah gasped.

I stared at my sister.

“Why?””

Elena cried harder.

“Because Victor was going to kill him.””

Silence.

Victor’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

I noticed.

Because after fourteen months of searching, I had learned to notice everything.

“What?””

Elena continued.

“Leo found the documents.””

She looked at Marcus.

“He found out Victor had been using our father’s accounts.””

Marcus nodded.

“Leo found evidence.””

I looked at Victor.

“And you wanted him gone.””

Victor smiled.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Victor looked almost amused.

“Your son was a witness.””

“A witness to what?””

Victor didn’t answer.

That scared me.

Because confident people don’t avoid questions unless the answer matters.

I stepped closer.

“What did Leo see?””

Victor’s face hardened.

For the first time, the mask slipped.

“He saw something he was never supposed to see.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then Elena whispered:

“Victor and David’s father arguing.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with Leo?””

Marcus answered.

“Your father wasn’t trying to protect the company.””

I looked at him.

“He was protecting himself.””

My heart pounded.

“From what?””

Victor laughed quietly.

“You really don’t remember.””

I hated those words.

Because they were always true.

There were pieces missing.

Pieces everyone else seemed to have.

Victor looked at me.

“That night, your father’s old records were about to become public.””

“What records?””

“The ones proving he destroyed Marcus’s family.””

I looked at Marcus.

He looked away.

“My mother…”

His voice became quiet.

“Your father blamed her for his mistakes.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Because my entire understanding of my family had been built on stories.

Stories my father told.

Stories everyone accepted.

Victor continued.

“Leo found those records.””

“And?””

“He wanted to tell you.””

My chest tightened.

“Of course he did.””

Leo had always been like that.

Honest.

Brave.

He believed adults could fix anything.

“He came to me.””

Victor’s words froze me.

“What?””

“He came to me first.””

Everyone turned toward him.

“Why?””

Victor smiled.

“Because children trust people who pretend to listen.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You used him.””

“I questioned him.””

“You manipulated an eight-year-old.””

Victor shrugged.

“He was intelligent.””

“You’re disgusting.””

He ignored me.

“Leo told me everything he found.””

“Then why didn’t you let him go?””

Victor looked at the floor.

“Because he had something I needed.””

“What?””

“The location of the final document.””

I stared.

“My son didn’t know.””

Victor smiled.

“He did.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“Leo would have told me.””

“He tried.””

The words hit me.

I stopped.

Victor looked directly at me.

“He tried to tell you.””

A memory flashed.

Leo standing in the garage.

Holding something.

“Daddy, I found proof.””

My breath caught.

Victor continued.

“But you didn’t believe him.””

I closed my eyes.

Because that part was true.

I remembered.

I remembered being exhausted.

Stressed.

Angry.

I remembered thinking Leo had found some old papers and misunderstood them.

I remembered telling him:

“Buddy, grown-up problems aren’t for you.””

The guilt hit harder than anything else.

Victor saw it.

“You sent him away.””

“No.””

“You told him to wait.””

“No.””

“You told him you’d handle it.””

My eyes opened.

“Yes.””

Victor nodded.

“And then?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I remembered.

Elena had called me.

Leo was scared.

I came to the garage.

I argued with him.

Then…

A door.

A sound.

A flash of pain.

And then nothing.

“What happened?””

My voice was barely audible.

Elena stepped forward.

“David…”

“Tell me.””

She cried.

“You opened the basement door.””

I looked at the panel.

“And Leo was there.””

“Yes.””

My heart broke.

“What did I do?””

Elena covered her face.

“You saw him.””

“I saw him?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t I take him?””

Nobody answered.

The silence destroyed me.

I looked at Marcus.

“Tell me.””

Marcus looked away.

“I wasn’t there.””

“Then who was?””

Elena whispered:

“Victor.””

I turned.

Victor smiled.

“Now you’re getting close.””

My anger returned.

“What did you do?””

Victor looked at me.

“I showed you the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That Leo was in danger.””

I laughed.

“From you.””

“No.””

Victor shook his head.

“From everyone.””

I stared.

He continued:

“David, that night, you discovered something.””

“What?””

“You discovered that your son wasn’t just a witness.””

I waited.

“He was protecting you.””

My breathing stopped.

“What?””

Victor looked toward the floor.

“Leo found out your father had left one final secret.””

“What secret?””

Victor smiled.

“The truth about you.””

My stomach tightened.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“What are you talking about?””

He stepped closer.

“Your father wasn’t your real father.””

The room went silent.

Again.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life collapsing.

I looked at Marcus.

He looked away.

“Elena?””

She was crying.

“I wanted to tell you.””

My voice shook.

“Tell me what?””

She whispered:

“Marcus isn’t the only child our father had.””

I stared.

“What?””

Marcus looked at me.

“We have the same mother.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No.””

My entire life was changing.

Everything I believed about my family was breaking apart.

Victor watched it happen.

And I realized something.

He wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t afraid.

He enjoyed this.

“You see, David?””

He smiled.

“You spent fourteen months searching for Leo.””

He looked toward the floor.

“But you never searched for yourself.””

I hated that I felt afraid.

But I did.

Because suddenly the biggest mystery wasn’t where Leo had been.

It was why everyone had worked so hard to keep me from remembering.

I walked toward the panel.

The key was still in my hand.

Victor watched me.

“Open it.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you deserve to see.””

I inserted the key.

It turned.

Click.

Everyone froze.

I pulled the handle.

The hidden door slowly opened.

A cold wave of air rose from beneath.

Dark stairs disappeared underground.

Sarah grabbed Maya.

Elena covered her mouth.

Marcus stepped closer.

And then…

A small voice came from below.

“Dad?””

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t breathe.

Because after fourteen months…

I was about to see my son.

I stepped onto the first stair.

Then the second.

And Victor whispered behind me:

“Ask him why he was protecting you.””

I stopped.

Turned around.

Victor was smiling.

“Because when Leo tells you the truth…”

His eyes narrowed.

“You’ll finally understand why you were the one who locked him away.””
