The next forty-eight hours changed everything.

Before, I was the kid everyone ignored.

Now I was the person everyone was watching.

Teachers whispered when I walked by.

Students stopped conversations when I entered rooms.

Even people who had bullied me suddenly acted careful.

But I noticed something.

Nobody apologized.

That bothered me.

People loved watching someone fall.

But when the truth started climbing back up, they didn’t know what to do.

Hawthorne Academy announced that Brandon’s suspension was under review.

My suspension was removed.

The edited video was officially being investigated.

But none of that mattered.

Because I knew the truth.

Someone powerful had tried to erase me.

And they weren’t finished.

I met Brandon after school behind the gym.

He looked different.

Less confident.

Less like the king of the school.

More like someone who had finally realized his crown was fake.

“You came,” he said.

“I almost didn’t.””

He nodded.

“Fair.””

That was the first normal thing he had ever said to me.

I crossed my arms.

“Why did your father tell you to target me?””

Brandon looked down.

“Because he knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That you were Marcus Cole’s son.””

The answer hit harder than I expected.

“How?””

“My father had people watching.””

“Watching me?””

Brandon nodded.

“For years.””

I felt sick.

“My whole life?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because your existence was a problem.””

I looked at him.

“A problem?””

“My father told me Reed Global belonged to his family now.””

I laughed once.

“That’s not how inheritance works.””

Brandon didn’t smile.

“He doesn’t care how things work.””

The honesty was uncomfortable.

Because for the first time, I realized Brandon wasn’t defending his father.

He was afraid of him.

“What happened to my father?””

Brandon looked away.

“I don’t know.””

“Your father does.””

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

I stepped closer.

“Then why hasn’t he told anyone?””

Brandon was quiet.

Then he said:

“Because if the truth comes out, my family loses everything.””

I studied him.

“You knew.””

“No.””

His answer was fast.

Then slower.

“I knew something was wrong.””

That was different.

He looked embarrassed.

“I thought my dad was just protecting the family.””

“From what?””

Brandon looked at me.

“From you.””

I didn’t say anything.

Because that was the strangest thing.

I wasn’t trying to take anything from them.

I was trying to understand what had been taken from me.

That evening, Daniel took me to Reed Global headquarters.

The building was enormous.

Glass walls.

Marble floors.

Employees moving quickly.

A place where people built careers.

A place where my father’s name should have been everywhere.

Instead, it had been erased.

No photographs.

No mention.

Nothing.

Like he never existed.

“That was intentional,” Daniel said.

I looked at him.

“What?””

“After Marcus disappeared, his name was removed from company history.””

I felt anger.

“They erased him.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

We entered the executive archive room.

Daniel used his credentials.

Inside were decades of company records.

He searched for Marcus Cole.

Almost everything was gone.

Almost.

Then we found something.

A hidden file.

Created sixteen years ago.

The title made my heart stop.

Project Ethan.

I stared at it.

“My father made a file about me?””

Daniel opened it.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

School information.

Photographs.

Everything.

Someone had been tracking my life.

My achievements.

My struggles.

My entire existence.

Then we found the final page.

A handwritten note.

Not from my father.

From someone else.

Daniel read it quietly.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

The message was short.

Marcus,

Your son is alive.

But he will never know the truth unless you fail.

I read it again.

Then again.

My hands started shaking.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because we both knew.

It meant my father wasn’t the only person keeping secrets.

Someone had been communicating with him.

Someone had been threatening him.

Someone who knew about me before I even understood my own story.

Then the office lights went out.

The entire building went dark.

People shouted outside.

Emergency alarms started.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Ethan.””

“What?””

He looked toward the door.

“We need to leave.””

A second later, every computer screen in the archive room turned on.

One message appeared.

White letters against a black background.

STOP LOOKING.

I stared at the screen.

And then another line appeared.

YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO FIND HIM.

My heart pounded.

Because I finally understood.

The missing heir.

The broken watch.

The hidden files.

The lies.

They weren’t just trying to hide the past.

They were terrified of what would happen when the past came back.
