The Westchester home looked different. Claire had hired a landscape crew to clear out the overgrown hedges near the front porch, letting the sunlight flood directly into the front windows. She had repainted the kitchen cabinets a soft, warm cream, replacing the dark, heavy aesthetic that had defined the house during the decades of Daniel’s reign.

On a bright Saturday morning in April, Claire sat on the back patio with a cup of freshly brewed herbal tea, listening to the birds chirp in the maples.

Her phone buzzed on the glass table beside her.

She picked it up. A text message from Emma: “Hey Mom! Me and two of my roommates are coming home for dinner tonight. Can you make that lemon garlic chicken you make? Also, Dad tried to email me asking for my new address. I blocked him.”

Claire smiled—a small, genuine, radiant smile that reached all the way to her eyes. She typed back: “Chicken is on the list, sweetie. Drive safe.”

She locked her phone and set it back down on the table.

For the first time in twenty-three years, she didn't feel the phantom weight of anxiety waiting for a car door to slam in the driveway. She didn't wonder where anyone was, or who they were with, or whether the stories they told were held together by lies.

She took a slow, deep breath of the crisp spring air, feeling the sun warm her face.

She had lost a man who was never truly hers to begin with. But in the quiet space he left behind, she had finally found herself. And as she looked out over her garden, she knew with absolute certainty that the best chapters of her life were only just beginning.
