In the study, Christian sat with Detective Alvarez, the lead investigator on the case.

"Nathan Vance broke within twenty minutes of interrogation," Alvarez said, closing his notebook. "He confessed that on the night of the accident, Julian offered him five million dollars to alter the surgical records and insert the damping implant while Leo was anesthetized for facial lacerations. Julian’s plan was to maintain the condition until Leo turned eighteen, ensuring Julian retained legal conservatorship indefinitely."

Christian listened, each word feeling like a blow to his chest. "How could I not have noticed?" he whispered, pressing his palms against his temples. "I am his father. I lived in the same house. Every time he looked at me with those quiet, empty eyes... I accepted it because the doctors told me to."

"Grief does terrible things to our perception, Mr. Ashford," Alvarez said gently. "Julian used your pain as a shield. But your boy is safe now. What matters is what happens next."

When the detective left, Christian walked into the garden. He found Clara sitting on a stone bench near the fountain, watching Leo inspect a bumblebee hovering over the lavender.

"Clara," Christian called out.

She stood up immediately, smoothing her apron with professional deference. "Yes, Mr. Ashford? If you need me to pack my things while the investigators are here—"

"Pack your things?" Christian interrupted, taken aback. "Why would you pack your things?"

"I... I am only a temporary maid, sir," Clara replied softly, casting her gaze downward. "And with everything that has happened—the police, the media—I thought you would prefer complete privacy."
