Fatima didn't hesitate. She fired twice more through the open doorway, splintering the wooden moldings, forcing the second attacker to scramble for cover around the corner.
"Bitch has a gun!" someone roared in Italian. "Throw a stun grenade!"
Before the pin could be pulled, the sound of tearing metal and squealing tires echoed from the carriage house driveway.
Alessandro’s custom armored Mercedes G-Wagon had plowed straight through the garden gates, crushing the intruders' utility van against the stone fountain.
Alessandro did not wait for the vehicle to stop. He kicked the door open while the SUV was still sliding across the wet gravel, moving with blinding, lethal fury.
Dante and four Rienzi enforcers poured out behind him like wraiths.
The Italian sentry by the garden wall barely had time to raise his weapon before Alessandro’s rifle double-tapped him in the chest. Alessandro vaulted the stone steps of the carriage house, sweeping through the shattered front door like a hurricane of black wool and hot lead.
The second operative in the cellar corridor turned, hearing the carnage behind him, but he was too late.
Alessandro caught him by the throat, slamming his skull into the brick wall with bone-crushing force, disarming him in the same fluid motion, and sending him sprawling unconscious onto the concrete.
Alessandro kicked the reinforced cellar door wide open, his weapon raised, sweeping the corners.
He found Fatima standing in the center of the room, both hands wrapped around the Glock, smoking muzzle pointed straight ahead. Her knuckles were white, her eyes wild, her chest heaving.
At her feet lay the first operative, motionless.
Alessandro lowered his weapon instantly.
"Fatima," he said, his voice softer than anyone on his payroll had ever heard it. "It's me. Stand down."
Fatima looked at him. The adrenaline drained from her limbs in an instant, her knees giving out.
Alessandro closed the distance in two strides, catching her before she hit the floor. His strong arms wrapped around her trembling shoulders, supporting her entirely.
The gun fell harmlessly onto the carpet.
Fatima buried her face in his chest, her hands gripping the lapels of his coat as ragged, silent sobs shook her frame. Alessandro held her tight, his hand resting behind her head, feeling the wild hammering of her pulse.
"You're safe," Alessandro murmured into her dark hair, his voice vibrating with absolute protection. "I have you. You're safe."
A tiny squeak came from the wall.
The cedar wardrobe door pushed open. Amara peered out, still clutching her gray lamb. Her eyes scanned the blood on the floor, the broken door, and then landed on Alessandro holding her mother.
She crawled out of the wardrobe, walked over with quiet, solemn steps, and wrapped her small arms around Alessandro’s leg.
Alessandro looked down at the child. Then he looked toward the doorway, where Dante was dragging the unconscious intruders out into the corridor.
The cold calculation was gone from Alessandro Rienzi's eyes. In its place was something infinitely more terrifying:
Total, unconditional extermination.
