Beyond its iron gates, black cars rolled up a winding driveway while photographers waited behind velvet barriers. Inside, crystal chandeliers scattered golden light across polished marble, champagne flowed freely, and the city's wealthiest families laughed as though nothing in the world could ever touch them.

At the center of it all stood Vanessa Vale.

She wore a crimson gown that seemed designed to command attention. Diamonds rested against her throat. Her father was a powerful developer, her friends were senators' children and corporate heirs, and Vanessa had spent her entire life believing that money was the same thing as power.

Tonight, she intended to prove it.

Then Clara Bennett appeared.

Clara was twenty-six, exhausted, and wearing the simple white uniform of the Sterling Estate's temporary catering staff. She had spent the evening moving silently between tables, carrying crystal glasses for people who rarely looked at her.

She didn't mind being invisible.

Invisible meant safe.

Until she saw Mrs. Gable.

The elderly woman sat alone near the edge of the ballroom, one trembling hand clutching her shawl.

Vanessa had just turned toward her with an irritated expression.

"Why is she still sitting there?"

Clara looked up.

Something in Vanessa's voice made her stop.

This wasn't annoyance.

It was cruelty.

And Clara had learned long ago that cruelty became dangerous when nobody challenged it.
