By morning, the accusation was everywhere.

Anonymous documents had been leaked to financial reporters.

Emails appeared to show Adrian ordering surveillance of Eleanor.

Another file suggested he wanted his mother declared legally incompetent so he could consolidate control of family voting shares.

Claire read the headlines in disbelief.

Adrian Ashford had gone from concerned son to suspected villain overnight.

The board called an emergency meeting.

Adrian was temporarily asked to step aside from certain merger negotiations.

And Claire discovered how quickly powerful people could become isolated.

She found him alone in his office.

“Did you do it?”

He looked at her.

Everyone else had apparently asked the question carefully.

Claire didn’t.

“No.”

She nodded.

“That’s what I needed.”

“You believe me?”

“I believe evidence. But I also believe your mother.”

“What does she say?”

“That you annoy her constantly.”

Adrian almost smiled.

“And?”

“That you’d never deliberately hurt her.”

His face softened.

Claire placed the leaked email on his desk.

“This is fake.”

“How do you know?”

“Your emails don’t look like this.”

He frowned.

“I’ve received company emails from you. Your signature automatically includes your middle initial.”

Adrian looked closer.

The leaked message said Adrian Ashford.

His actual signature said Adrian J. Ashford.

Small.

Almost meaningless.

Except someone inside the company should have known.

“Claire.”

“What?”

“You may have just given us something.”

Digital investigators examined the files.

The metadata had been manipulated, but not perfectly.

The trail led to an administrative account.

Diane Mercer’s.

Claire stared at the name.

“My supervisor?”

Diane was questioned.

She broke within an hour.

But she wasn’t the mastermind.

She had been paid to provide internal schedules, employee access data, and information about Eleanor’s visits.

By whom?

A board member named Charles Vane.

One of Adrian’s father’s oldest partners.

Charles had opposed Adrian’s merger strategy for months.

More importantly, Eleanor controlled enough family shares to determine a critical board vote.

If Eleanor appeared cognitively incapable and Adrian appeared to be exploiting her, both could be neutralized.

Victor had been involved.

But only partially.

He had followed Eleanor.

He claimed he had never authorized the robbery.

Charles had.

Police traced payments through shell accounts.

The teenage thieves had been recruited by an intermediary and told only to steal Eleanor’s phone.

Everything began to unravel.

Yet Charles made one final move.

At the emergency board meeting, he challenged Eleanor’s ability to vote.

The room fell silent.

Eleanor sat at one end of the long table.

Adrian sat several chairs away.

Claire had no reason to be there.

Except Eleanor had asked for her.

Charles spoke calmly.

“Mrs. Ashford, with respect, recent events demonstrate significant concerns regarding your capacity.”

Eleanor stared at him.

“You mean because I forgot my name?”

“Among other things.”

“I forgot my name for several hours.”

“You became lost.”

“Yes.”

“You entrusted yourself to a stranger.”

Eleanor smiled.

“That was apparently one of the better decisions I’ve made recently.”

Several board members shifted.

Charles continued.

“You cannot deny cognitive decline.”

“No.”

Everyone stopped.

Eleanor looked directly at him.

“I won’t deny it.”

Adrian looked at his mother.

Eleanor continued.

“I forget things. Sometimes frightening things. There may come a day when I cannot sit at this table.”

She paused.

“But that day is not today.”

Charles opened his mouth.

Eleanor raised a hand.

“And the fact that someone used my vulnerability against me does not prove I am incompetent. It proves someone else is cruel.”

Claire felt goosebumps rise along her arms.

Evidence was presented.

Financial transfers.

Access logs.

Messages.

Security footage.

Charles’s composure finally broke.

Police were waiting outside.

When he was escorted from the building, he looked at Claire.

“You.”

She froze.

“If you had kept walking that night, none of this would have happened.”

Claire stared back.

He was right.

If she had ignored Eleanor, the phone might have remained missing longer.

The scheme might have worked.

Adrian might have lost control of his company.

Eleanor might have been publicly discredited.

Claire answered quietly.

“Then I’m glad I stopped.”

Charles disappeared through the doors.

Eleanor smiled.

Adrian looked at Claire.

But the crisis wasn’t finished.

Because the following morning, Claire received an email from Human Resources.

Her employment was under formal review.
