Part 2 ⬇️

I didn't move.

Three knocks.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Caroline grabbed my arm.

"Ryan.

Please.

Just come back out."

I pulled free.

"Who is in there, Caroline?"

She didn't answer.

Her eyes went to the little girl still crouched beside me in the dark.

The child hadn't let go of my sleeve.

I looked down at her.

"What's your name?"

She whispered.

"Mia."

Caroline made a sound I had never heard from her before.

Something between a sob and a warning.

I turned back to the door and knocked twice.

Silence.

Then a voice came through the wood.

Low.

A woman's voice.

"Ryan…

is that you?"

My whole body went cold.

I knew that voice.

I hadn't heard it in six years.

"Caroline." My voice came out flat.

"Open this door right now."

She was shaking.

"You don't understand what happened.

You don't know the full story."

"Then tell me."

"I can't.

Not here.

Not in front of the children."

Mia tugged my sleeve again.

She looked up at me with eyes that were too familiar.

Then she said four words that made the walls close in.

"She said you'd come."
