The waitress, Naomi, watched the boy lower his eyes while the man ate a full plate in front of him.
“He hasn’t earned dinner,” the man said coldly.
“Bring him water.”
Naomi crouched beside the boy.
“Are you sure you’re not hungry?”
The boy glanced at the man before whispering, “I’m not allowed to answer.”
The man grabbed his coat.
“We’re leaving.”
“Your check hasn’t been paid,” Naomi said, buying time as another server quietly called the police.

Three shaky words were written underneath: HE’S NOT DAD.
Naomi’s heart pounded.
“Sir, what’s the boy’s name?”
The man hesitated.
“Ben.”
The child looked up.
“That’s not my name.”
The restaurant fell silent.

Inside was a photograph of another young boy—and a note with Naomi’s name written across the front.
She stared at it in disbelief.
“How do you have this?” she whispered.
The man’s face lost all color.
“Don’t open that envelope.”
Why was Naomi’s name inside the boy’s backpack—and what was the man hiding?
