Mr.
Robinson finally stepped back.
But he didn't leave the kitchen.
He pulled out a chair, sat down slowly, and looked at Andre with something cold in his eyes.
"You think you know your mother?
Ask her.
Go ahead.
Ask her what she did."
Andre turned to his mother.
Mrs.
Robinson had her arms wrapped around herself, eyes down, lips pressed tight.
"Mom.
What's he talking about?"
She didn't answer.
"Mom."
When she finally looked up, her eyes weren't sad anymore.
They were scared.
"Andre, baby…
there are things that happened before you were born.
Things I never wanted you to know."
Mr.
Robinson let out a short, hard laugh.
"Tell him.
Or I will."
The silence stretched across the kitchen like something about to snap.
Then Mrs.
Robinson walked to the counter, opened the drawer where they kept the old bills and papers, and pulled out a small envelope.
Her hands were shaking.
She held it out to Andre but didn't let go right away.
"I kept this because I didn't know what else to do," she whispered.
"I was trying to protect you."
Andre took the envelope.
His name was written on the front in handwriting he didn't recognize.
---
What's inside that envelope — and why has Mrs.
Robinson been hiding it all these years?
The truth is more painful than Andre ever imagined.
