Police collected every medication, vitamin, supplement, and bottle in Ethan's house.

The laboratory found nothing unusual in his prescription medication.

For six hours Ethan felt foolish for hoping the answer would be simple.

Then a technician tested the powdered electrolyte mix Vanessa prepared for him after morning workouts.

It contained a sedative not listed on the label.

A low dose.

Not enough to kill him.

Enough to make him tired, unfocused, forgetful.

Enough to make a man question himself.

Ethan sat in silence while Maya explained.

"If you felt foggy, missed details, signed things without reading carefully..."

"I did."

He remembered the last three months. Headaches. Exhaustion. Falling asleep over paperwork. Vanessa teasing him about getting old.

He remembered one night when she placed a folder in front of him.

Just insurance forms, she'd said.

He had signed two pages before stopping because Sophie came into the room crying from a nightmare.

"Find those forms," Ethan said.

Nina did.

One was harmless.

The second was a signature page separated from the trust amendment.

Graham had not yet attached it legally, but the intent was obvious.

They wanted Ethan impaired enough to sign.

Then they wanted Sophie gone.

Aaron Blake agreed to give a statement. He described isolation, financial pressure, hidden recordings, and unexplained fatigue during his engagement to Vanessa.

"I thought I was losing my mind," he said over video call. "That's the part she was best at. Making you distrust your own memory."

Ethan looked toward the living room where Sophie was building a tower with wooden blocks.

"Did she hurt children before?"

Aaron's face changed.

"I didn't have kids."

Then he added, "But my dog disappeared."

Ethan felt a chill.

That night Sophie asked if they could throw away the dog bowl.

"Absolutely."

They carried it to the outside trash together.

Sophie watched the lid close.

"It's gone?"

"It's gone."

She nodded.

For the first time, Ethan saw something like confidence return to her face.

Then his phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photo appeared.

Sophie asleep in her bedroom.

Taken from inside the room.

The timestamp was two minutes old.
