Ethan grabbed Sophie so quickly she dropped a wooden block.

"Dad?"

"We're playing a game. I need you to stay with Martin."

His voice was calm. His body was not.

Martin saw the photo and immediately locked down the house.

Security checked doors, windows, attic access, garage, service corridors.

Police arrived in six minutes.

No intruder.

Then Martin enlarged the picture.

"Wait."

He pointed at the blanket.

"That's not tonight."

Ethan looked.

Sophie wore pajamas with tiny yellow stars.

Tonight she wore blue ones.

"Old photo," Ethan said.

"Sent to make you think someone's inside."

Maya traced the message to a disposable internet service.

"Could be Vanessa. Could be Daniel. Could be someone helping them."

Ethan looked around his house and suddenly hated every blind corner.

"We're leaving."

They moved that night to a private apartment owned by Ethan's company under a separate legal entity. Only Martin, Maya, Rachel, and Sophie's therapist knew the location.

Sophie thought it was a sleepover.

She chose the smallest bedroom because it had a window seat.

"Can I see the door from the bed?"

"Yes."

"Can you leave the hall light on?"

"All night."

When she finally slept, Ethan sat outside her door until sunrise.

The next morning Maya called.

"We found the source of the old photo."

"Where?"

"Vanessa's cloud account. Deleted folder."

"So she sent it."

"Maybe. But here's the problem: the account was accessed last night from your house."

Ethan stood.

"You said nobody was inside."

"We thought nobody was."

Police searched again, this time opening maintenance panels.

Behind the wall of the upstairs linen closet, they found a narrow service cavity connecting to old HVAC access.

Inside were food wrappers, gloves, and a prepaid laptop.

Someone had been hiding in the house.

Martin stared at the crawlspace.

"For how long?"

A forensic officer held up a coffee receipt found beside the laptop.

It was dated four days earlier.

Then Ethan saw the name printed on the cup.

GRAHAM.

But Graham had been in custody for two days.

Someone else had been using his name.
