The words changed the urgency of everything.

Not yet.

It suggested there had been a later plan.

Prosecutors moved quickly. Vanessa was arrested the next morning on multiple charges tied to child endangerment, conspiracy, forgery, unlawful surveillance, and attempted financial fraud while investigators continued reviewing evidence.

Cameras crowded the courthouse steps.

Ethan stayed away.

He spent the morning making pancakes with Sophie.

She poured too much syrup on hers and watched him carefully.

"Is this too much?"

"There is no syrup police in this apartment."

She smiled.

Then she poured more.

Small freedoms mattered now.

Vanessa's attorney claimed the recording was taken out of context.

Graham's lawyer blamed Vanessa.

Daniel's lawyer blamed Graham.

Vale's lawyer claimed all reports were professional opinions.

Everyone suddenly became innocent alone.

The recovered files showed they had worked together.

But one mystery remained: what did Vanessa mean by "not yet"?

Maya found the answer in Daniel's prepaid phone.

A deleted message thread discussed a plan for the weekend after the wedding.

Ethan and Vanessa were supposed to fly to St. Barts.

Sophie would remain behind with a temporary caregiver recommended by Dr. Vale.

Two days later, the caregiver would report an emergency behavioral incident.

Sophie would be transported to the residential facility.

Ethan would receive a frantic call while overseas.

Vanessa would pressure him to approve treatment remotely.

"And if I refused?" Ethan asked.

Maya slid the phone toward him.

One message from Daniel read:

THEN WE USE PLAN B. E NEEDS TO STAY OUT LONG ENOUGH FOR THE TRANSFER.

The sedative.

Ethan stared at the words.

"They were going to drug me."

"Likely."

"And Sophie?"

"We don't know what 'not yet' meant beyond that."

Ethan did not want to know.

That evening, Sophie asked if her mother had known Vanessa.

"No," Ethan said. "Your mom died before I met her."

Sophie looked at Claire's recovered necklace lying inside a temporary evidence photograph.

"Mommy would've known she was bad."

Ethan smiled sadly.

"Your mom noticed everything."

Sophie thought about that.

Then she said, "I noticed too."

Ethan looked at her.

For the first time, the sentence held no fear.

Only pride.
