Ethan didn't move his eyes from Grant.
"Who else?" he said quietly.
Grant's jaw tightened.
He said nothing.
But his eyes went to the ballroom door again — just for a second.
That one second told Ethan everything.
He walked to the ballroom entrance and pushed the door open.
The music stopped.
Forty guests turned to look at him.
Ethan scanned the room slowly.
Then he saw her.
His aunt Miriam.
Seated at the head table.
Wine glass in hand.
Watching him with an expression that wasn't surprise.
It was calculation.
"You knew," Ethan said.
Miriam set her glass down carefully.
"Ethan, darling.
You look exhausted.
Come sit down and we can—"
"My daughters were eating moldy bread ten feet from this room."
The guests went still.
Miriam's voice dropped.
"Children are dramatic.
They exaggerate.
You've been away a long time.
You don't understand what managing this household actually requires."
"Managing." Ethan repeated the word like it tasted wrong.
One of the little girls appeared in the doorway behind him.
Harper.
Still barefoot.
Still holding the piece of bread she hadn't been allowed to eat.
Every person in that ballroom looked at her.
Miriam's composure finally cracked — just slightly.
Her eyes moved to Vanessa.
A silent signal.
But Vanessa didn't move.
Because Ethan still had the tablet.
And Claire's recording hadn't finished.
There was a second file on that flash drive.
One Claire had recorded separately.
One that had a name on it that nobody in that ballroom expected to hear.
---
What's on that second recording — and whose name does Claire say?
What Ethan uncovered next shook everyone in that room to their core.
