“And Daniel wants Mia away from your estate.”
“Yes.”
“Then we don’t go back.”
Adrian looked at her.
“No argument.”
That surprised her.
“I expected one.”
“I’m evolving.”
Victor muttered:
“Terrifying.”
Adrian ignored him.
“Hotel.”
Elena stiffened.
“No.”
“Private floor.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because your idea of safe means twenty armed men and cameras.”
“Yes.”
“That’s exactly what Daniel might be warning about.”
Adrian stopped.
Good point.
“Where do you want to go?”
Elena looked surprised.
“My sister’s.”
“Location?”
“Queens.”
“Does anyone know about her?”
“Everyone knows I have a sister.”
“Then no.”
She glared.
“You just asked what I wanted.”
“I did not promise agreement.”
Mia raised her hand.
Adrian looked at her.
“Yes?”
“Zoo.”
Victor covered his face.
Adrian nodded.
“Least secure option so far.”
Mia smiled.
Elena almost laughed despite herself.
Then the apartment intercom buzzed.
Everyone froze.
Victor moved toward it.
“Who?”
A female voice crackled through.
“Package for Elena Rossi.”
Elena frowned.
“I didn’t order anything.”
Adrian looked at Victor.
“No one opens the building door.”
Victor checked through the peephole camera on the lobby feed after calling building management.
Courier.
Cap.
Brown jacket.
Holding a white bakery box.
Mia brightened.
“Cake.”
“No,” three adults said at once.
The courier left the box with the super after receiving no answer.
Ten minutes later Victor retrieved it after security screened it.
Inside:
No cake.
A black phone.
Damaged along one side.
Elena stopped breathing.
“Daniel’s.”
“How do you know?”
“The case.”
Faded black leather.
A small scratch on the corner.
She had bought it for him.
Victor stared.
“The phone from Locker 309.”
Adrian nodded.
Marco had taken it.
Then sent it here.
Deliberately.
A sticky note covered the screen.
ONE CALL ONLY.
NO MORETTI NETWORK.
Adrian looked at Victor.
“Airplane mode.”
“Already.”
They isolated it from every network.
The device still held local files.
Photographs.
Voice recordings.
Messages.
Most corrupted.
One recent note was open.
Timestamp:
Today.
7:11 a.m.
IF ADRIAN FOUND 417, HE WILL FIND 309.
IF MIA FOUND BOTH, SOMEONE INSIDE HIS HOUSE PUT THEM THERE.
Adrian stared.
Elena whispered:
“Daniel wrote that?”
“Yes.”
Another line:
TRUST MARCO UNTIL HE GIVES YOU A REASON NOT TO.
Victor raised an eyebrow.
“Comforting endorsement.”
Adrian scrolled.
DO NOT TRUST VICTOR HALE.
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Victor stared at the screen.
Then at Adrian.
“That’s unfortunate.”
Elena immediately picked Mia up.
Victor raised both hands.
“I understand.”
Adrian studied him.
Victor had worked beside him for nine years.
Saved his life twice.
Knew every security protocol.
Every estate entrance.
Every account used for private travel.
Exactly the kind of man who would matter if someone had been watching household staff.
Adrian did not reach for a weapon.
“Give me your phone.”
Victor handed it over immediately.
“Sidearm.”
Victor removed it and placed it on the table.
“Backup?”
An ankle holster.
Elena stared.
Victor looked almost embarrassed.
“Occupational.”
Adrian took that too.
“Keys.”
Victor complied.
“Sit.”
Victor sat.
No argument.
That mattered.
Elena whispered:
“You’re just going to believe a note?”
“No.”
Adrian looked at Victor.
“I’m going to verify it.”
Victor nodded.
“Good.”
The damaged phone contained a second file.
Audio.
Recorded seven months earlier.
Daniel’s voice.
“Marco, if you’re hearing this, then I’m not coming back tonight.”
Static.
Then:
“Victor Hale is not who he says he is.”
Victor closed his eyes.
Adrian’s face hardened.
The recording continued.
“His father wasn’t Elias Hale.”
Victor whispered:
“No.”
Elena looked between them.
Daniel:
“His real father was Antonio Bellini.”
Silence.
Marco Bellini’s older brother.
Adrian stared at Victor.
“You’re Marco’s nephew.”
Victor said nothing.
Daniel continued:
“And Antonio worked for Silvio Moretti until the warehouse fire.”
Adrian’s stomach tightened.
Silvio.
His father.
Dead twelve years.
The same man connected to Box 417.
The recording continued:
“Victor may not know all of it.”
Adrian paused.
Important.
Daniel was not saying Victor was enemy.
Only hidden.
“Do not confront him until you know whether Marco told him.”
The audio ended.
Adrian stared.
“Did he?”
Victor looked down.
“Not until last year.”
Elena held Mia tighter.
“You lied to Adrian.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Victor looked at Adrian.
“Because if I told you Marco was my uncle, you would have investigated him.”
“Yes.”
“And then you would have found Daniel.”
Silence.
Adrian felt cold.
“You knew Daniel was alive.”
Victor’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Adrian stood so quickly the chair scraped back.
Mia flinched.
That stopped him.
Immediately.
He looked at the child.
Then back at Victor.
“How long?”
“Fourteen months.”
Elena stopped breathing.
“You knew my husband was alive for fourteen months.”
Victor nodded.
Her face changed.
Rage.
Grief.
Humiliation.
Adrian stepped between them, not to protect Victor but to preserve space.
“Why?”
Victor looked at Elena.
“Daniel asked me not to tell you.”
Her voice broke.
“Why would he ask that?”
“Because he thought someone was using your apartment to track him.”
“My apartment?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then what good were you?”
Victor flinched.
Adrian almost intervened.
Didn’t.
Elena had earned anger.
Victor continued:
“Daniel believed the person hunting him had access to Moretti estate schedules and household staffing.”
Adrian felt sick.
The recorder from Box 417.
They’re using household staff because nobody watches the people who clean the rooms.
Not an insult toward staff.
A warning that invisible roles created access.
“Who hired Elena?”
Adrian asked.
Victor went still.
Elena looked at him.
“What?”
Adrian turned.
“Who recommended you for the estate job?”
She thought.
“The employment agency.”
“Name?”
“Harbor Domestic Services.”
Victor closed his eyes.
Adrian saw it.
“You know them.”
“They’re one of our approved vendors.”
“Who approved them?”
Victor said nothing.
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Victor.”
“I did.”
Silence.
Elena stepped backward.
“You brought me into his house.”
“No.”
“Your vendor did.”
“Yes.”
“Same thing.”
Victor shook his head.
“I didn’t choose you.”
“Can you prove that?”
“No.”
Adrian felt the pieces forming.
Daniel’s warning.
Household staff.
Elena’s desperate employment.
Mia under his desk.
Keys deliberately placed where she would find them.
Someone had designed proximity.
But perhaps not to harm Adrian.
Maybe to force contact between Adrian and Daniel’s family.
“Did Daniel ask you to approve Harbor?”
“No.”
“Marco?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Victor looked ashamed.
“My predecessor had started the vendor review.
I finalized it.”
“Who was your predecessor?”
Victor’s face hardened.
“Leon Vescari.”
Adrian went still.
Leon had served Silvio Moretti.
Then Adrian.
He retired eight years earlier after a stroke.
Died three years ago.
Or so Adrian believed.
He almost laughed from exhaustion.
“If you tell me Leon is alive, I’m leaving.”
Victor blinked.
“No.
He’s definitely dead.”
“Thank God.”
Mia whispered:
“That mean?”
Elena sighed.
“Nothing, baby.”
Adrian returned to the phone.
One remaining recent video.
Recorded yesterday.
He pressed play.
Daniel appeared.
Alive.
Older.
Thin.
Beard streaked with gray.
Elena made a sound that barely qualified as breath.
Mia smiled.
“Daddy.”
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“Elena.”
She covered her mouth.
“I know what this will do to you.”
Tears streamed down her face.
“I’m sorry.”
Mia reached toward the screen.
Daniel continued:
“I stayed dead because the first time I tried to come home, someone photographed me outside Mia’s daycare.”
