Daniel held the paper like it was something dangerous.

Nobody wanted to ask.

But everyone needed to know.

“What does it say?”” my father asked.

Daniel didn’t respond.

His eyes stayed fixed on the page.

I watched my brother’s hands begin to shake.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

He finally looked up.

“It says the baby wasn’t mine.””

The words landed like a bomb.

Claire collapsed back into the chair.

My mother covered her face.

My father stared at the floor.

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly, the fake pregnancy wasn’t the biggest secret anymore.

The biggest secret was the reason it had been hidden.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Tell me this is fake.””

Claire was crying.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

She couldn’t.

That was the answer.

He stepped away.

“Who?””

Claire shook her head.

“Please.””

“Who was the father?””

Her silence filled the room.

Then my mother whispered:

“Michael.””

Everyone turned.

The doctor.

The man who had helped fake the records.

The man who had just called to reveal the truth.

Daniel looked like he couldn’t process it.

“No.””

My mother started crying harder.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“You were pregnant with his child?””

Claire nodded slowly.

“I didn’t know at first.””

The anger in Daniel’s face disappeared.

For a moment, there was only pain.

“How long?””

Claire wiped her tears.

“Before we got married.””

Nobody expected that.

“What?””

She looked at him.

“Michael and I were together before you and I met.””

Daniel stared.

“You told me you never dated anyone seriously.””

“I was ashamed.””

“Then why did you marry me?””

Claire’s voice broke.

“Because I loved you.””

Daniel looked away.

“Did you?””

That question hurt more than any accusation.

Claire covered her face.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because when I found out I was pregnant, I didn’t know whose life I was destroying.””

My mother stepped forward.

“And then the miscarriage happened.””

Daniel looked at her.

“And you decided to cover everything?””

My mother nodded.

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

She looked toward my father.

Then back at Daniel.

“The business.””

Everyone became confused again.

My father frowned.

“What does my company have to do with this?””

My mother hesitated.

Then she said:

“The inheritance agreement.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What inheritance agreement?””

I had never heard of one.

My father slowly sat down.

“It was written years ago.””

My mother continued.

“Your father made a condition. Whoever became the next CEO had to have a stable family image.””

Daniel looked stunned.

“That’s insane.””

“I know.””

“And you thought pretending I had a child would protect my position?””

My mother looked down.

“I thought it would protect our family.””

Daniel laughed.

A painful, empty laugh.

“You didn’t protect us.””

He looked at Claire.

“You turned me into a stranger in my own marriage.””

Claire whispered:

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“Tonight.””

Daniel looked at her.

“After the party?””

She nodded.

“After everyone celebrated.””

His eyes filled with disappointment.

“That wasn’t honesty.””

The room stayed silent.

Then Sophie, who had been sitting quietly, suddenly spoke.

“Mommy said someone was coming.””

Everyone looked at her.

Emma frowned.

“Sophie?””

The little girl looked toward the hallway.

“Before the party, Claire said she was scared because someone was going to tell Uncle Daniel.””

Daniel turned.

“Who was coming?””

Sophie shrugged.

“I don’t know.””

Then the ballroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Well-dressed.

And very familiar.

My father’s face drained of color.

Because he knew him.

Daniel looked confused.

“Dad?””

My father didn’t answer.

The man stepped inside.

“I think it’s time everyone heard the rest of the story.””

Claire stood.

“Victor…”

The man smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

He looked directly at Daniel.

“I’m the reason your wife lied.””

Nobody moved.

Because Victor wasn’t a stranger.

He was my father’s oldest business partner.

And the man who had been like family for forty years.
