Victor Hale walked into the ballroom like he belonged there.

Maybe that was what made it worse.

He didn’t look nervous.

He didn’t look guilty.

He looked prepared.

My father stared at him.

“Victor.””

A lifetime of friendship disappeared in the way he said that name.

Victor sighed.

“Robert.””

Daniel stepped between them.

“You knew?””

Victor looked at him.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew Claire was lying?””

“I knew part of it.””

“Part?””

Victor glanced at Claire.

Then at my mother.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

Daniel laughed.

“Then explain it.””

Victor walked toward the table and poured himself a glass of water.

Nobody stopped him.

Not because we trusted him.

Because we were too shocked.

“The baby changed everything.””

Daniel clenched his fists.

“Stop talking like this was some business decision.””

Victor looked at him.

“To your father, it was.””

My father stood.

“Don’t.””

Victor ignored him.

“Robert built this company from nothing. But he also built rules that trapped everyone around him.””

My father’s face hardened.

“This has nothing to do with you.””

“It has everything to do with me.””

Victor looked at Daniel.

“Because your father planned to hand control of the company to you.””

Daniel said nothing.

“And when the board questioned whether you were ready, he created the family condition.””

My father looked away.

“I made that decision for the future.””

Victor nodded.

“And I knew Daniel would lose everything if his image collapsed.””

Daniel stared.

“So you forced Claire to fake a pregnancy?””

Victor’s expression changed.

“No.””

He looked at Claire.

“I gave her a choice.””

Claire started crying.

“A terrible choice.””

Victor continued.

“When she lost the baby, she wanted to tell Daniel.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“And you stopped her?””

Victor shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked confused.

“Then who?””

Victor looked at my mother.

My mother closed her eyes.

The answer came before she spoke.

“Me.””

Daniel turned.

“Mom?””

She stepped forward.

“I begged Claire not to tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew you would walk away from everything.””

Daniel stared.

“And you thought lying was better?””

My mother’s voice broke.

“I thought losing a child would destroy you.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“But you let me believe I was going to have one.””

Nobody had an answer.

The truth was finally out.

But somehow, it felt worse.

Then Victor spoke again.

“There is one more thing.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“What now?””

Victor reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a folder.

“I found this yesterday.””

He placed it on the table.

My father looked confused.

“What is it?””

Victor looked at him.

“The original inheritance agreement.””

My father frowned.

“I know what it says.””

“No.””

Victor shook his head.

“You know what you signed.””

He opened the folder.

“But you don’t know what was changed afterward.””

A chill went through me.

Daniel picked up the papers.

“What do you mean?””

Victor pointed to the bottom of the page.

“There’s an added condition.””

Daniel read silently.

Then he looked up.

His face had gone pale.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

Daniel handed me the paper.

I read the sentence.

And my blood ran cold.

Because the condition wasn’t about having a child.

It wasn’t even about marriage.

It was about something else entirely.

The agreement stated that if Daniel’s family life was ever proven to be built on deception…

he would lose control of the company.

And the person who would inherit everything was…

Victor Hale.
