By 6:00 PM, the legal team had finalized the paperwork. Ethan and Marcus had signed every release, effectively surrendering their last leverage and severing all ties to Vance Logistics forever. They left the building through the service exit, defeated and broke.
The floor was quiet as the staff went home for the evening. I stood in my private study adjacent to my office, pouring two glasses of amber whiskey.
Julian walked in, carrying his tablet, his shoulders finally relaxing. "The debt release is registered with the state court. They can never touch us again, Madeline."
I handed him a glass. "We did it, Julian."
"You did it," he corrected gently, clinking his glass against mine. "You saw through their bluff before they even sat down."
We drank in silence, the warm amber glow of the sunset casting long shadows across the room. I looked at Julian—the man who had stood by my side during the dark, humiliating night of my eviction, who had transitioned from managing my grounds to building an empire with me.
"Julian," I said softly, stepping closer to him. "Why did you stay with me eighteen months ago? You could have managed any luxury estate in the country."
Julian set his glass down on the mahogany side table. He looked into my eyes with an intensity that made my pulse quicken.
"Because the night I watched you stand up in that cold rain and take your life back," Julian whispered, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion, "I knew I was looking at the most extraordinary woman I would ever meet. Working for you was an honor. Building this with you... became my whole life."
He reached out, his warm, strong fingers gently tucking a strand of dark hair behind my ear. For the first time in four years, my heart beat not out of survival, but out of pure, unadulterated desire.
