The heavy thud of the landing gear locking into place echoed through the cabin of the commercial airliner, shaking us out of our brief bubble of insulation. Outside the scratched, condensation-streaked windows, the grey, sprawling concrete of George Bush Intercontinental Airport rushed up to meet us under a humid Houston sky.

My heart, which had finally found a steady, rhythmic cadence during those two hours of unconsciousness leaning against Adrian Prescott’s shoulder, slammed back into overdrive.

Only moments before, the whisper from the flight attendant had dropped like a detonator in our row: “Mr. Prescott, your security team is currently waiting for you on the tarmac.”

And then came his confession.

Adrian Prescott.

The name wasn't just known in corporate circles; it was a monolith. The Prescott Group controlled everything from next-generation tech infrastructure to massive private healthcare networks across the hemisphere. Every financial journal, every tech blog, and every local news broadcast featured the elusive, intensely private billionaire who rarely granted interviews and practically lived behind layers of high-grade security details.

And he had spent the last two and a half hours letting me drool slightly on his custom-tailored navy sport coat because I was too exhausted to care.

“You’re… that Adrian Prescott?” I had breathed out, my voice trembling as the sheer absurdity of my situation crashed down upon me.

He had offered that tired, self-deprecating smile, his dark eyes crinkling at the corners. “And you are the very first person in months who treated me just like an average passenger, Elena.”

Before my brain could process the magnitude of sitting next to a man whose net worth could probably buy a small country—let alone fund my meager fresh start in Pasadena—his phone had buzzed against the tray table. The single notification illuminated his screen, and the gentle, approachable stranger vanished instantly, replaced by the razor-sharp focus of an apex corporate predator.

“What’s going on?” I had asked, watching the color drain from his face.

He looked up from the screen, his voice dropping into a register so cold and serious it chilled my blood. “Elena… someone was asking questions about you before we even landed.”

Now, as the plane slowed its taxi toward the gate and passengers began unbuckling their seatbelts with a collective rustle of nylon and zippers, the reality of my vulnerability slammed into sharp, terrifying focus.

How did anyone know I was on this flight?

I had paid for my ticket using my last scraps of independent savings under a cash-converted debit card. I hadn’t told a single soul in Monterrey where I was going, aside from my distant cousin whose tiny Pasadena apartment was supposed to be a ghost address.

Could it be Ethan?

My ex-husband—the man who had changed the locks on our home, locked me out of our mutual bank accounts, and replaced five years of my youth with a shiny new social media aesthetic—was a mid-level regional director for an import-export firm. He had money, yes, but he didn't possess private security teams tracking commercial flights across international borders.

Or did he?

What if Ethan had deeper connections than I ever realized? What if his betrayal ran even darker and more entangled than the casual cruelty of a routine divorce?

“Stay close to me,” Adrian murmured, his voice cutting cleanly through the ambient noise of the deplaning cabin. He didn't wait for my permission; he reached out, effortlessly securing the straps of my heavy diaper bag over his own shoulder while scooping up the folded stroller with his free hand.

“Adrian, I can’t—you don’t need to get involved in my mess,” I stammered, shifting Lily, who was beginning to stir and rub her sleepy eyes against my chest. “You have a security team waiting. You have an empire to run. I’m just a runaway mother trying to find a corner to hide in.”

Adrian turned his head, his gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that made it impossible to look away. “Elena. A man who asks a stranger to fake sleep on his shoulder to dodge paparazzi doesn't walk away when that same stranger is suddenly hunted. We stay together until we figure out who is looking for you.”

The aisle began to clear as the crowd surged forward toward the exit doors. With every step we took toward the jet bridge, the invisible noose around my neck tightened. We were walking straight out of a flying aluminum tube and into a trap, and I had no idea whether the jaws snapping shut belonged to my vindictive ex-husband or something far more dangerous tied to the man walking beside me.
