The moment we stepped off the jet bridge into the bustling terminal of George Bush Intercontinental, the atmosphere changed completely.

While ordinary travelers rushed toward baggage claim or connecting gates, a trio of men in immaculate charcoal suits and dark sunglasses detached themselves from a structural pillar near Gate B14. They moved with the synchronized, predatory grace of federal agents or elite private protection—broad-shouldered, hyper-vigilant, and scanning every passing face with calculating precision.

The lead man, an imposing figure with a shaved head and a communication earpiece glowing blue, stepped directly into Adrian’s path. But instead of bowing or saluting, his eyes flicked instantly to me and Lily, then back to Adrian with unspoken urgency.

“Mr. Prescott. We have a secure perimeter at the private executive hangar, but the terminal approach was compromised three minutes ago,” the lead guard reported crisply, his voice a low baritone.

Adrian held up a single hand, stopping the briefing dead in its tracks. He didn't look at his head of security; he looked down at me.

“Marcus, change of plans. We aren't heading straight to the corporate chopper,” Adrian said, his tone absolute. “We are taking Mrs. Morales and her daughter to the secure VIP transit lounge in Terminal C. And I want a full sweep of incoming passenger manifests from Monterrey over the last forty-eight hours. Cross-reference every name against known associates of Ethan Walker.”

I gasped, stumbling half a step backward. “Ethan? You already know his name?”

“When my team runs a query on someone who triggers an alert near a person traveling in my immediate vicinity, we don't waste time, Elena,” Adrian replied smoothly, gesturing for Marcus to take the heavy diaper bag. “Let’s walk. This terminal is too open.”

As we navigated the labyrinthine corridors of the Houston airport under the silent, protective canopy of Adrian’s security detail, my mind raced in frantic circles. How had Adrian’s team pulled Ethan’s name so fast? Had my ex-husband really tracked me here, or was this some surreal coincidence?

We were escorted into a sprawling, soundproofed VIP suite tucked away behind a discreet frosted-glass door bearing no corporate logo. Inside, the space resembled a luxury penthouse apartment rather than an airport lounge—complete with leather sofas, a mahogany wet bar, a private nursery nook stocked with plush toys and organic formula, and a wall-mounted bank of monitors displaying live feeds of the terminal outside.

Marcus placed my bags on a luggage rack, nodded respectfully to Adrian, and stepped outside to guard the door, leaving just the three of us—plus a very confused, wide-awake baby Lily who immediately crawled toward a plush oversized teddy bear on the floor.

Adrian sank heavily into a leather armchair, rubbing the bridge of his nose as if trying to massage away a splitting migraine. He looked up at me as I stood awkwardly near the entrance, clutching my purse like a shield.

“Sit down, Elena. Please,” he offered softly, gesturing to the sofa opposite him. “Let’s look at the facts instead of letting panic write horror stories in our heads.”

I sat down on the edge of the cushion, keeping my posture rigid. “Adrian, you don't owe me this. You’re a billionaire tech mogul. I’m just a fugitive housewife from Mexico with a backpack and a bounced check history. Why are you risking your time and security on me?”

A faint, bitter smile touched his lips. “Because, Elena, for the first time in five years, someone on an airplane looked at me without calculating what my net worth could do for them. You didn't flatter me. You didn't record me on a cell phone. You shared your shoulder, and you gave me two hours of absolute peace in a life that is otherwise a relentless war zone.”

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “And more importantly: nobody hunts people in my orbit without my permission. If someone is tracking you on my watch, we are going to find out why.”

At that moment, the door hissed open slightly, and Marcus stepped back inside, holding a secure encrypted tablet. His face was a mask of grim professional focus.

“Sir, we ran the cross-reference on Ethan Walker,” Marcus announced, handing the tablet directly to Adrian. “He didn't fly out of Monterrey. In fact, our local surveillance flags indicate Ethan Walker is currently sitting in a high-end steakhouse in downtown Dallas, posting geotagged photos with his new girlfriend to throw off suspicion.”

My breath caught in my throat. “Dallas? But if it’s not Ethan... then who the hell is looking for me?”

Adrian stared down at the glowing screen of the tablet, his eyes narrowing as he scrolled through a rapid stream of data. Slowly, color seemed to drain from his face, replaced by a dark, simmering fury.

He looked up at me, his voice barely above a whisper.

“It’s not your ex-husband, Elena. The person asking questions at the gate in Monterrey... was working for my own board of directors.”
