Arthur Kensington lunged forward, grabbing the edge of the desk. “Julian, listen to reason! Even if Victoria made an emotional error—even if she overstepped—the merger documents are already signed! My board approved the transfer! If you pull out now, the litigation will tie up your shipping lines for a decade!”

David Mercer stepped forward, opening a thick manila folder stamped with the seal of the Illinois Department of Revenue.

“There will be no litigation, Arthur,” David said, his voice flat as an iron slab. “Because forty minutes ago, your nephew, Marcus Cole, was apprehended at the Beloit toll plaza by the Wisconsin State Patrol.”

Arthur’s face went entirely white. “Marcus?”

“Marcus was carrying two encrypted hard drives and half a million dollars in undeclared cashier's checks,” Agent Vance reported, stepping to the desk. “The moment our federal agents presented him with the interstate kidnapping and wire fraud statutes, he signed a full, unredacted confession.”

Agent Vance tapped the console on the desk, playing the audio transcript of the interrogation:

“It was Arthur and Victoria’s idea from the start... They knew Anna was carrying Julian’s child. If Julian had a male or female heir with a non-contractual wife, the 1999 Sterling family trust would permanently close its voting shares to outside board members. Victoria told me to run her car into the river, but I couldn't do it... I pulled her out and hid her in Rockford. Victoria paid me forty-five grand a month to keep them in the dark until the wedding was finalized.”

The silence in the library was sudden, crushing, and absolute.

Victoria sank back into the leather wing chair, her hands flying to her face as a broken, hysterical wail escaped her lips.

Arthur Kensington dropped his silver-topped cane, stumbling backward until his spine hit the mahogany bookshelves. The arrogant patriarch had evaporated; in his place stood a ruined, disgraced old man staring into the abyss of a federal penitentiary.

“You didn't just kidnap the mother of my child, Arthur,” Julian said, looking at the old man with cold, clinical disgust. “You committed federal interstate racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, and securities fraud under Title 18. And tomorrow morning, the Kensington name will be stripped from every maritime vessel on the Great Lakes.”
